MEDEMBLIK, 22 MAY – She gave up her job to specialise in kitesurfing. In May 2012 kitesurfing (course racing) was named as an official sport at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. A few months later that decision was taken back by ISAF. “That was a big disappointment’’, says Katja Roose on Thursday at the third day of the Delta Lloyd Regatta.

In Medemblik kite surfing is for the first time present at the Delta Lloyd Regatta. A group of 23 kiters got the opportunity to promote their sport for three days. Roose is one of them. She’s competing with the men this time. “This is a great chance to show that kitesurfing (course racing) belongs at the programme of the regatta. We are very glad with this opportunity. We can show what we are doing’’, the number one in the world ranking says.

Roose has been part of the kitesport since 2001. She became World Champion slalom, was involved with freestyle and speed and decided a few years ago to change to course racing. “That had nothing to do with the possible Olympic status. When I heard kitesurfing would be on the Olympic programme in Rio I decided to stop working and focus on course racing. A few months later my dream fell apart. I hope kitesurfing gets an Olympic chance in 2020’’, smiles the 33-year old.

At the Delta Lloyd Regatta kitesurfing is a demonstration event, but for the kiters themselves it’s more than that. They earn points for the World Ranking. “But the main goal is to promote our sport’’, Belgium kiter Michiel Schittkat said. “Racing against each other is spectacular. Finally we are more sailors than everybody thinks.’’

“It’s the combination of speed, upwind skills and tactics that makes it interesting for a lot of people. And it is spectacular, reallyexciting. You can do badly in one race, but you have lot of races to improve too’’, Roose explains. “Florian Gruber is the World Champion and is racing here, Italian Ricardo Andrea Leccese is a big star in our sport and also competing in Medemblik. I hope we get the people interested in our sport. We like to be on a big sailing podium.’’
