General Info:
The location and the Village
The Island Territory of Bonaire is one of five island areas (Eilandgebieden) of the Netherlands Antilles, consisting of the main island of Bonaire and, nestled in its western crescent, the uninhabited islet of Klein Bonaire. Together with Aruba and Curaçao it forms a group referred to as the ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles, the southern island chain of the Lesser Antilles.
As part of the Netherlands Antilles, Bonaire is accordingly a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The structure of the relationship between Bonaire, the Netherlands Antilles and the Kingdom is being considered for change under proposed legislation. The Netherlands Antilles was scheduled to be dissolved as a unified political entity on 15 December 2008, so that the five constituent islands would attain new constitutional statuses within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but this dissolution has been postponed to an indefinite future date. As of December 15, 2008, legislation to amend the charter of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and to define the new status of Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius was still being reviewed.
It is a small island with a small spot and the nearest city is Kralendijk. If you walk on the boulevard you will find allot of restaurants with seafood. On Bonaire you pay with the Gulden. One euro is like 2,5 guldens.

The season is from January till September. The prices are prtty normal like in Europe. There are allot of hotels where you can stay, they are all pretty good hotels.
Possibilities besides kiting
Next to kiting you can go wake boarding, cycling, you can visit the nature park and the biggest thing next to kiting is diving. Bonaire is one of the best deving spots on the world.
Climate
Bonaire is blessed with one of the gentlest climates in the Carribean, with very little rainfall (less than 22 inches annually) and a prevailing easterly trade wind that provides a constistent 15 mph (= 25 Kmh) breeze. This trade wind is also one of the coral reefs best friends and a major reason these reefs are among the most prolific in the world. When the wind blows constinuously from the same direction, one side of the island has "rough" water conditions (the windward side), the other side (the leeside) is almost always clam. Since Bonaire lies at a 90 degree angle to its trade winds, the island's western side (where you'll find all of the snorkeling operations) is always calm and protected.
Not only does this provide perfect snorkeling conditions about 99% (no exaggeration) of the time, it also alows corals to grow prolifically in shallow water (rough water tends to knock some of the corals over, preventing them from attaining full growth). The low rainfall on Bonaire is also a blessing, since fresh water from rivers (there are no rivers on Bonaire) and rain runoff are enemies of the coral reef. Freshwater runoff almost contains sediments, which can harm the coral by literally smothering it.

The beach
The beach is pretty small, and the beach is made from white sand and old dead coral. On the beach is a little kiteschool with a boat. There are further no other (dangerous) objects on this beautifull beach.
The water conditions
The water (25C) is really clear and the first four meters you can stand. Afther the first few meters the water is to deep to stand and it has some scharp coral under it. The water is super flat.
The wind conditions
The wind is always offshore (15-30 knots). Early in the day and at the ending of the midday the wind is the best (pretty stable). During the day the wind can be a littlebit gusty.
Facilities
There is a kite school at the spot Atlantis, there is a boot and you can rent stuff there.(www.kiteboardingbonaire.com).
The spot is most of the time not really bussy, only when there is a big groop of people (15) it can get a bit bussy.
Downwinder and trip possibilites
There are not really downwinders but you can go to Klein Bonaire with the boot and go kite there.

Algemene informatie over het eiland:
Bonaire is een van de 6 eilanden die nog steeds bekend staan als de Nederlandse Antillen. Sinds 10 okotber 2010 is Bonaire echter een bijzondere gemeente van Nederland geworden, inwoners van het eiland mogen sindsdien dus stemmen bij de verkiezingen voor de Tweede Kamer. Het eiland is ongeveer 2 keer zo groot als Texel, bewoners zullen dus ook zeggen dat alles een kwartiertje rijden is.
Het eiland heeft zo'n 17.000 inwoners, In 2001 had 86% van de bevolking de Nederlandse nationaliteit, maar was slechts 52% op het eiland zelf geboren. Naast veel mensen van de andere eilanden Curacao en Aruba, uit Nederland en de buurlanden Venezuela en Colombia wonen er veel mensen uit de Dominicaanse Republiek, grotendeels arbeidsmigranten.
De officiele taal is Nederlands, 75% van de bevolking spreekt Papiaments (een mix van Spaans, Portugees met invloeden uit het Nederlands, Engels en Frans). In de meeste winkels, restaurants en cafe'skan je je dus prima redden in het Nederlands, Engels wordt ook veel gesproken.
Werd er vroeger met de Antiliaanse gulden betaalt, tegenwoordig is de US Dollar het gangbare betaalmiddel, de hoogte van de wisselkoers Euro/Dollar bekijken voor het reizen naar Bonaire kan de moeite zijn. Bonaire is niet een van de goedkoopste bestemmingen, het merendeel van de goederen moet aangevoerd worden over zee of door de lucht.
Vervoer:
Verschillende vliegtuig maatschappijen vliegen naar Bonaire, waaronder Arke/Arkefly en KLM. Meestal doen ze ook op de heen en terugweg een tussenstop op Curacao of Aruba. Een combi tussen de eilanden is dus ook een optie.
Op het eiland zelf kan je voor redelijke prijzen een auto huren, de kitespot ligt toch 10 minuten rijden vanaf Kralendijk waar de meeste hotels zitten, een scooter huren is ook een optie. Sommige hotels hebben ook een shuttle service.
Seizoen en accommodaties:
Het beste windseizoen is van januari tot en met september (80-95% kans op >4 Bft). Van oktober tot december is er ook een goede kans op wind (60-80% kans op >4 Bft), dit is wel het orkaan seizoen. De wind komt vrijwel altijd uit het oosten.
Qua accommodatie is er een ruime keus voor elk budget, er zijn geen hotels direct aan de kitespot. Bij Lac Bay waar je wel mag windsurfen maar helaas niet meer mag kitesurfen zit het Sorobon Beach Resort, rustig en perfect voor gezinnen met kinderen maar minder geschikt als je je in het nachtleven wil storten.
Wat te doen als het niet waait?
Bonaire is de plek om te gaan duiken, er zijn meer dan 60 plekken waar je kan duiken, alle plekken zijn netjes aangegeven met een grote genummerde steen en een kaart met beschrijvingen erbij is overal verkrijgbaar. Daarnaast kan je ook wakeboarden achter een boot, vissen of het eiland verkennen op een mountainbike.
Voor alle watersporten heb je een "Nature Tag" nodig, deze is voor duikers $ 25,- en voor de overige watersporters $ 10,- Door de tag aan te schaffen, draagt u bij aan het onderhoud en de bescherming van het park. Zo kunnen ook toekomstige generaties van de natuur genieten.
Klimaat:
Bonaire heeft een tropisch savanneklimaat. De temperaturen zijn vrij constant over het hele jaar met maximum temperaturen rond de 30-32 graden die overdag al vrij snel gehaald worden. Zodra de avond ingevallen is zakken de thermometers langzaam totdat er een ondergrens van 23 tot 25 graden gehaald is. Onder invloed van de Caribische Zee en de noordoostpassaat is er slechts weinig variatie in de temperaturen. In de wintermaanden zorgen deze twee elementen ervoor dat het land wat opgewarmd wordt, in de zomer werkt de wind over de relatief op dat moment iets koelere zee juist weer verkoelend. Neem dat laatste woord niet te letterlijk, want echt koel wordt het nooit op Bonaire. De kracht van de wind is gemiddeld zo'n 15 knopen, in het wind seizoen dat loopt van januari tot september iets meer.
In "regen"maanden oktober, november en december valt er zo'n 250mm regen de rest van de maanden zo'n 20mm per maand. Echt nat ga je er niet van worden, het meeste verdampt zeer snel.
Spot info Atlantis Beach:
The beach:
Er is maar 1 goeie spot op Bonaire, Atlantis Beach. Het strandje is vrij klein en bestaat uit zand en dood koraal, beetje opletten waar je je kites neerlegt dus. Slippers zijn aan te raden als je je kite optuigt.
Zijn 2 kitescholen aanwezig op Atlantis Beach, zij hebben ook bootjes die de rescue service verzorgen. Dekiteschool van Roan Jaspars, Kiteboarding Bonaire is duidelijk herkenbaar aan de grote witte schoolbus.
Op het water:
De aflandige wind zorgt voor vlak en helder water. De eerste meters kan je nog staan maar het beste is om zo snel mogelijk op je board te gaan staan omdat er ook koraal op de bodem ligt. Schoentjes zijn niet nodig zodra je zelfstandig wat heen en weer kan varen.
Wetsuit is ook niet nodig, het water heeft een een temperatuur van 25C. Een lycra met lange mouwen en een flinke pot zonnebrand is wel aan te raden.
Echt druk wordt het nooit op het water, aan beide kanten van de launch plek is voldoende ruimte. De kans is groot dat je dolfijnen zult zien.
De wind condities:
De wind is vrijwel altijd offshore, soms side offshore, kracht 15 tot 30 knopen afhankelijk van het seizoen. In de ochtend en later in de middag is de wind op z'n best en stabiel, rond de middag kan de wind vlagerig zijn.
Faciliteiten:
Er zijn 2 scholen aanwezig, Kiteboarding Bonaire (www.kiteboardingbonaire.com) heeft een oude grote bus als opslag plek staan waar je info en wat drinken kan halen. Verder zijn er geen voorzieningen. Neem voldoende water en wat te eten mee. Meldt je even bij 1 van de scholen voor de rescue service.
Downwinder en andere spots:
Soms regelen de kitescholen downwinders naar Klein Bonaire, je kan eventueel ook zelf een boot regelen en richting Klein Bonaire gaan.
Aan de oost kust van Bonaire staan wel golven, het probleem daar is dat het nauwelijks mogelijk is om het water in te komen. Er liggen overal rotsen en de golven slaan vrijwel gelijk stuk op de kust. Lac Bay is een bekende windsurf spot maar helaas mag daar niet gekite worden, met wat local info is het mogelijk voor experts om te kiten op de buitenkant van het rif daar.
Ben je op zoek naar een plek waar je ook goed kan kiten op de golven dan kan je beter een andere bestemming zoeken, Bonaire is meer geschikt voor cruisen in je boardshort en freestylen.
