General Info: The location and the Village
Greece is a country in the southeastern Europe, situated on the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula.
The island Kos is a Greek island in the south Sporades group of the Dodecanese, next to the Gulf of Gökova/Cos. It measures 40 kilometres by 8 kilometres and is 4 kilometres from the coast of Bodrum, Turkey and the ancient region of Caria. The Island has both fertile plains and mountainous highlands with a population of 30.947.
Kefalos
Kefalos is situated at the southwest side of the island 43 km from Kos Town and has less then 3.000 inhabitants. Kefalos is the closest town to Kohilari beach at 3 km. This is the quiet part of the island and although the main income are the tourists it is still quiet compared to Kos City.
The seasons and Hotel info
The best months to visit Kos are June July and August. In May and September you need some luck. During July and August you will have 15 - 25 knots Meltemi wind (NW).
Kohilari beach does not have any Hotel only one small Kiteschool. You need to look for Hotels in Kefalos which is 3 km from Kohilari Beach. You can easily rent a motorcycle or a car and drive to Kohilari beach in 5 minutes and park your car on or close to the beach.
Possibilities besides kiting
Besides kitesurfing you can:
- Visit ancient Pili (totally made out of rocks)
- visit Zia to do some touristic shopping and for the best sunset on the Island
- Visit Kos city for more shopping and the nightlife
- Visit Bodrum (Turkey) with a boot
- Rent a buggy and drive to the zilion beaches to check them out
- Go mental on renting watersportstuff; speedboats, Crazy bananas, Jetskis etc.etc.
Climate
Kos is part of the Dodecanese island group which has a Mediterranean type of climate featuring mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.
Spot conditions: The beach
Kohilari beach is 6km long beach. A lot of beaches in Greece have stones but Kohilari beach is a nice white sandy beach. There is one small wooden building build in 2008 by a local kiteschool. The 200 metres on the left of the building is for swimmers.
The 5.8 km on the right of the building is for kitesurfers. The beach is only 10 to 20 meters wide, just enough for launching kites. Because the wind is side-onshore and sometimes onshore the spot is crowded pretty fast. This is also the case because everyone starts at the kiteschool. Make sure you use the 5.8 km lenght and you will find your space.
The water conditions
The water is crystal clear and with the white sand it looks awesome.
There are small waves formed by the wind or around 1 meter. Sometimes 1.5 meter when the wind is harder. The first 50 meter the water is shallow. In the summer the water is around 25 degrees; shorts and a lycra! Besides the white sand there are a couple of rocks in the water.
The wind conditions
The wind usually picks up around 12 and will blow untill 8 pm. At the start you will need a 14 meter and after 2pm you can start pumping your 10 meter kite.
Facilities
There is a kiteschool on the spot. You can also rent stuff at the kiteschool and there are beverages available. For food you have to drive back to Kefalos which is less then 10 minutes away.
Downwinder and trip possibilites
Between the beaches the coast is rocky so forget the downwinders. You can easily drive to Marmari beach or Kos city which both have a kitebeach as well.
Travel info
Kos has an airport in the middle of the island. You can easily get a cab from the airport to Kefalos which will cost you around 25 euro. During the summer there are a lot planes with tourists flying to Kos so it should be fairly easy to book a flight. Besides taking a cab you can also rent a car which is fairly cheap and the best way of transport on the Island.
