General Info:
The location and the Village
Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily). The area of Sardinia is 24,090 square kilometres (9,301 sq mi). The nearest land masses to the island are (clockwise from north) the French island of Corsica, the Italian Peninsula, Tunisia, and the Balearic Islands. Sardinia is part of Italy, with a special statute of regional autonomy under the Italian Constitution. click for larger version

Porto Pollo, north of Palau, is a bay often used by kitesurfers (and windsurfers). The bay is divided into 2 areas, one for kiters and one for windsurfers. Many Italian freestyle surfers come to Porto Pollo for training and 2007 saw the finale of the freestyle pro kids Europe 2007 contest. Because of a venturi-effect between Sardinia and Corsica, western wind accelerates between the islands and creates the wind that makes Porto Pollo popular amongst windsurfing enthusiasts. In 2005, Aglientu, hosted the Kitesurf World Cup in the Vignola's beach.

Climate
The climate is typical of the Mediterranean. The weather is clear. During the year approximately 300 days are sunny and the few others are rainy, with a major concentration of rainfall in the winter and autumn, some heavy showers in the spring, and snowfalls on the highest massifs and highlands. The mistral is the dominant wind, fresh, strong, and usually dry and cold, blowing from the northwest throughout the year, but most frequently in winter and spring. The air temperature is between 25C and 35C.

Spot conditions:
The beach

It is a sandy long beach, enough space to launch and relaunch. The kite launch area is near the river mouth. In high season the beaches can be crowded, so watch out for bystanders. click for larger version

The wind conditions

The wind on Pollo Porto is caused by the venturi effect wich brings winds that blow up to 8 Beauforts and over. The wind is being squeezed through the Strait of Bonfacio between Sardinia and Corsica. On Pollo Porto you can kite almost with any wind direction, but the best direction is with East or Westerly winds (these are cross-on from left or right). The main wind direction is North-West. Winds from West tend to be slightly gusty, as they come over the land first. click for larger version

Besides the most common wind Sardinia has three other kind of winds (depending on the seasons):

The Tramontana
The Spring brings the tramontana from north to east with 6 - 8 Beaufort.

The Poniente
In the summer the poniente is south/west bringing 4- 8 Beaufort
The Scirocco
In the autumn the scirocco from North Africa with 5-6 Beaufort, and occasionally up to Force 9.
