General Info:
The location and the Village
Lisbon (Lisboa) is the capital and largest city of Portugal. It is also the seat of the district of Lisbon and the main city of the NUTS Lisbon region. Its municipality, which matches the city proper excluding the larger continuous conurbation, has a municipal population of 564,477 in 84.8 km2 (33 sq mi), while the Lisbon Metropolitan Area in total has around 2.8 million inhabitants, and 3.34 million people live in the broader agglomeration of Lisbon Metropolitan Region (includes cities ranging from Leiria to Setúbal).
Praia do Guincho is a popular Atlantic beach located on Portugal's Estoril coast, 5 km from the town of Cascais, and is located in the municipality of Cascais, more precisely in the parishes of Cascais and Alcabideche, in the District of Lisbon. The beach has preferred surfing conditions and is popular for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. Strong northern winds are predominant during summer time (June-August) as well as smaller north-west swells, making this beach ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. During winter (especially December), the predominant winds are from the east, and swells increase in side, making it a perfect spot for surfing, with multiple beach-breaks providing powerful lefts and rights. There is camping available at nearby Orbitur Point.
The seasons and Hotel info
The best months for kiting in Lisboa are from May through to August, maybe even September. Accommodation can be found for any budget, from luxury pousadas to pensions, small hotels or privately rented holiday-homes near the coast.
Possibilities besides kiting
Besides kitesurfing you can:
-Go enjoy other water sports
-Go shopping in Lisboa
-Enjoy nightlife in Cascais and in Lisboa
Climate
Lisbon has a Mediterranean climate that is strongly influenced by the Gulf Stream, giving it one of the mildest climates in Europe. The city is sunny throughout the year, with an annual average of 2900-3300 hours of sunshine.
Summers are warm and dry with average daytime temperatures of 26–29°C, falling to 16–18°C at night. Winters are cool and rainy with temperatures around 8–15°C, while spring and fall are generally mild, or even warm during daytime. Extreme temperatures may reach 36°C in some of the warmest summer afternoons and 2°C in the coldest winter mornings. From May to September the weather tends to be settled most of the time with blues skies and some wind as well.
Spot conditions:
The beach
The Guincho beach is medium sized sandy beach. In the summer the beach can be pretty crowded, and here and there are some rocks. There are two launches, north and south of the rocks. North the waves are a bit cleaner and the wind more constant. You have enough space to launch your kite with safety.
The water conditions
The water looks nice and is pretty clean, much cleaner than closer to Lisboa. The watertemperature varies between 13°C and 18°C. So you will need a wetsuit almost all year round. Dont forget the waves! The chance for big ocean swell is bigger in spring and autumn than in summer (but less wind). In the winter the swell is huge, but the wind is rare and there is allot of rain. In the winter a big shorebreak and currents make the conditions very hard, experts only.
The wind conditions
Thermal effect make the wind, the Nortada, stronger. The best months are May through to August. The wind is gusty and swings between west-north-west and north-westerly. The wind is side-shore and blows from the right. During the day it keeps increasing the force up to force 7 by afternoon.
Facilities
Although it's a famous beach, dont expect all facilities like showers. There is a school and a possibility to rent gear. If you break something you can buy it at a local shop. You have to pay for parking in front of the 'Bar de Guincho'. Parking is free at the south end near the 'Hotel Muchaxo'.
Downwinder and trip possibilites
You can do trips to other spots near Lisboa:
Carcavelos
Not a perfect spot, only advanced riders. This spot is only kitable with south and wersterly winds. Watch out for the big wall that separates beach from road.
The area of 'Costa da Caparica'
This area is a coastline of 10km with 15 seperated beaches. The waves are less powerfull than in Guincho. The best wind direction is north-westerly (sideshore). In the summer kiters are only allowed to kite further south on the 'Praia Nova Vaga', Lisbon's premier kite-beach.
