Country and Location
Poland, officially the Republic of Poland, is a country in Central Europe bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania to the east; and the Baltic Sea and Kaliningrad Oblast, a Russian exclave, to the north. The total area of Poland is 312,679 square kilometres, making it the 69th largest country in the world and the 9th largest in Europe. Poland has a population of over 38 million people, which makes it the 34th most populous country in the world and one of the most populous members of the European Union.
Hel Peninsula is a 35km long sand bar peninsula in northern Poland separating the Bay of Puck from the open Baltic Sea. It is located in Puck County of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. On this peninsula are some different spots but we describe the peninsula as one big kitespot.
The seasons and Accommodation info
The best months to visit Hel Peninsula are May-August. There are a lot of campings on this peninsula. In 1922 a 44km railway line was built to the very tip of the Hel Peninsula. This was quickly followed by the construction of smart hotels and pensions, mainly in the area that eventually became the resort of Jurata.
Possibilities besides kiting
Besides kitesurfing you can:
-Enjoy other watersports
-Check out the Maritime Museum
-Enjoy the nightlife on Hel Peninsula
-Check out the military base
-Visit all different towns on this peninsula
Climate
The climate is mostly temperate throughout the country. The climate is oceanic in the north and west and becomes gradually warmer and continental as one moves south and east. Summers are generally warm, with average temperatures between 20°C and 27°C. Winters are cold, with average temperatures around 3°C in the northwest and −8°C in the northeast.
You can get a suntant on the Hel beaches almost as quickly as on the Mediterranean. Washed by the sea on both sides, the Hel Peninsula has two microclimates. On the Baltic side, where cool northern winds blow, the sand warms more slowly and the water is colder. The beaches along the Gulf of Puck are sheltered by a belt of dunes and forests and are warmer, while the shallow water is great for bathing.
Spot conditions: The beach
The Hel Peninsula is the most identifiable feature created by nature on the map of Poland. This characteristic long tail of land is as recognizable as Poland as is the boot shape for Italy. The Hel wall of sand is a peninsula created by the currents and wind of the Baltic Sea and is approximately 34km long. The narrowest part is only 100m of sand wide and the widest is 3km. The beach at the ocean side (in summer pretty crowded) is medium sized, the beach at the bay side is small.
The water conditions
The water on the Puck bay side is shallow and flat to choppy. On the Baltic Sea side the water is choppy with some small waves. Whole year long, except in the summer, you need a wetsuit.
The wind conditions
On this peninsula the wind is not thermal and there is no trade wind. The winds are frontal. Because of the oceanside and bayside every wind direction is kitable.
Facilities
Not on every spot on this Peninsula are all facilities, but when you kite near a camping (like Camping Kaper) all facilities are available.
Downwinder and trip possibilites
The Hel Peninsula is a 35km big peninsula, so downwinder possibilities enough.
