National Sea Rescue Institute crews spent two hours searching for a kite-surfer in Bloubergstrand last night - only to discover he was safe ashore.

"Off-duty lifeguards witnessed a kite-surfer in trouble," said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

"Due to rough sea conditions, they did not notice that he had abandoned his kite and gone ashore."

The NSRI launched a two-hour helicopter search, helped by rescue boats and shore crew, and found the kite and board halfway between Robben Island and Bloubergstrand.

"We launched appeals on the radio and started receiving phone calls from people who had seen him come out of the sea.

The kite-surfer, Malte Siedler from Hamburg in Germany, who stays in Table View, told rescuers he had abandoned his kite when he got into trouble.

"This happens often. We appeal to kite surfers that when they abandon their kites to contact NSRI on 021 449 3500", said Lambinon.

  • In another incident on Friday, a 50-year-old man from Gordon's Bay was swept out to sea in Nature's Valley. The man had fallen off his body board but managed to get back to shore.

"We appeal to the public to exercise extreme caution when entering the sea, boating, swimming or paddling, in the coming seven to 10 days," said Lambinon. "Due to spring tide and full moon, the tides are higher and lower and there are stronger rip-currents."
