Some issues are right little terriers. Their constituent parts scamper about restlessly, refusing to be kennelled into the 124 page constraints required by the printing press. Stories need to be scraped from the bleeding fingernails of correspondents in far-flung countries; photo packages are snatched off sweat-browed Fedex men before being hurled at high velocity into the production room and spat out the other end. And it all climaxes sometime after 4.00 am… a caffeine-rushed, polka-dot screen blur, a heavy fog of smoke steadily lowering as the deadline looms…
