Reo Review
3 weeks ago my new quiver finally arrived, the new Reo! In sizes 6, 8 and 10. It took a little while to test them as the wind has not been very steady the last few weeks, but by now I have had a few go’s on the 6 and 8 and can only say that they are everything I expected.
Taking them out of the bag you immediately see the Ozone quality one is used to by now. Solid well made kites that will not be damaged easily. Also the design and colors are very cool! An improvement to the C4 kites in the color design is that there is no use of white material so it won’t stain when packed wet. The new bag does exactly what it has to, but I did miss a small pocket in it to store some keys or other small things when you take your kite to the beach on you bicycle. Also make sure that you take your own pump as the new valve system requires a bigger piece on your pump than most other brands. So it might be hard to use the pump of your mates!
My first ride on the 6 was in very light wind. The turning speed and nice light weight of the kite mad it possible to do a downwinder on this small kite in pretty light conditions, about 16 knts, and still have great fun! Especially the turning speed is enormous and it pivots aroud the tip if you need to do a fast steer to the other side like no kite I have flown before!
After this downwinder I had to wait another week for wind so I went uo to the island of Terschelling in the north to catch some action. As I thought it was not super strong I took my 8m to the beach and left my 6 in the trailer. But when I arrived at the beach it was a gusty 20-30knts onshore wind! Wrong choice in kita again I thought, but in the big onshore and messy conditions the 8 turned out to be great! The depower is super and it stays super stable in the gusts. I was really surprised by the easy handling of this kite in the stronger periods and the upwind I got from that in these rough conditions, It turnud out I was able to practise some strappless backside arials and was never worried to get too much pull from the kite.
The next day me and my mates planned another downwinder so we took a taxu to the east of the island. Again I chose wrong, for now I took my 6 again and when we arrived at the beacah after an half hour taxu drive it turned out the wind had dropped quite a bit. But again it turned out to be no problem as the low end of the 6 m was enough to get me going in pretty rough 3M wave conditions with little wind.
Riding it downwind it soon shows the up side if the light weight, it easliy floats downs the line wothout any backstall, hooked in as well as unhooked! But if you want to fly it actively when riding the wave the speed allows you to keep lots of pressure on you lines. But as I am used to with ozone kites bar pressure is super smooth!
Getting wahsed by a big 3M wave on the far outside bank I found out that the streght of this kite is super! It got washed with me being dragged down under water by some very big waves, but it stayed in pne piece! Also I was able to do a very easy relaunch once I surfaced so I could sail back to the shore line to get some rest!
All in all this kite soes everything you want it to in the waves! It is super fast, smooth and floats down the line when you want it to. It is solid and well build and I was surpiresed by the wind range. When traveling you only have to take an 8m with you and you will be sailing from 15 to 30 knts and will be having the time of your life! Thanks to the whole Ozone team for this kite, it is amazing!!!
