Last night’s Red Bull pool party at Hotel Coche Paradise was a big “splash” with the competitors and fans. Many were thankful for the later start to day three of the Venezuelan World Cup double eliminations. The green flag was up promptly at 1pm and the men took to the water anxious to prove themselves and make a run for the winner’s podium.

NIEUW NIEUW NIEUW NIEUW laatste nieuws

Day four of the 2006 Venezuelan World Cup dawned to more bright sunny skies and light winds. Competitors took advantage of the morning to catch up on rest and get ready for the slider contest scheduled for later in the day. Some riders gave interviews while others enjoyed relaxing at the cool kiters hangout, the Kitesurf Paradise Café, as well as swimming or hanging at the beach. Joe Ciastula and Christian Holley went for a swim with kite dog, Pheobe. Elli Zarka could be seen zipping around on a kite buggy. Cesar Portas and even event organizer Richard Farr took a moment out of their schedules to get their photos taken with the beautiful Polar Ice Girls. Action got underway at 3pm when the wind finally came up.
The Polar Ice Venezuelan National Kitesurfing Contest kicked off the day with one of the final three heats that went unfinished last week due to insufficient winds. Local Aquiles Zavala (Naish) took to the water against fellow local, Felix Martins (North), showing off a variety of kiteloop combinations, such as an excellent downloop KGB, keeping the kite at the judge’s preferred 45˚, lower angle. Felix was also riding extremely strong, nailing a smooth back mobe and kiteloop to backside flat 3, even going for a slim at the end of his heat, but the kite was too high and he did not have enough power for a clean landing. Aquiles meets up with Leo, “The Iceman” Estredo tomorrow when they complete the last two heats.
The men and women double elimination finals followed with Alvaro Onieva (Best, Spain) pitted against Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands). Both riders came out like firecrackers, tricks exploding one after the other. Kevin was ripping with a lot of speed, expertly executing his repertoire of kiteloop handlepass tricks, even going for and landing the mobe 7, however, in a very close almost split decision, the judges gave the heat to Alvaro based on power, his lower kite position and more technical aspects to his tricks.
Kristin Boese (Best, Germany) and Julie Simsar (Flexifoil, Turkey) took to the water next. Julie came out charging, nailing the handlepass in the first few second of the heat. Kristin then turned up the heat, sticking one technical trick after another, landing to blind in perfect form as well as executing the handle pass in both directions, earning her one more heat to go for the win.
The crowd went wild for Alvarro and Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, UK) as they ripped it up waiting for the green flag to go up. Alvaro waved to the crowd to help pump up the volume of the cheering. As soon as the horn sounded they came out firing. Unfortunately, the wind dropped off at 3:30 pm and the PKRA Race Director put up the AP flag, postponing the action until more suitable conditions arose. At 5:15 pm the horn sounded again and the men’s final got underway. The spectators lined the beach routing on the competitors as they both landed similar trick for trick, each also favoring the more powerful wake board style of riding. Alvaro was not quite as clean this round, although landing the mobe 7, which opened the door for Aaron to seal his spot on the winner’s podium, having displayed more varied, technical maneuvers with smoother landings.
This left Kristin and Julie last on the water, waging the battle for first place. Since Julie won the single eliminations, she had to be beaten twice in order to relinquish her first place finish. Kristin, charged from winning the first of the final heats, was ready for the challenge. Although both women landed the more difficult aerial handle pass trick, Kristin did it on both tacks, something the judges look for in scoring. Both women have a very powerful riding style, however, Julie struggled a bit with clean landings at the end and Kristin capitalized on it, starting the year with her #1 position intact.
Tonight sponsor Best Kiteboarding will throw a “Best Girl” model contest at Hotel Coche Paradise’s beautiful tropical pools. Over $500 of prize money and gifts will be awarded, so be sure to come and check out the action! Of course, there will be plenty of Polar Ice beer and Red Bull for the festivities. Tomorrow night event organizers and sponsors, Richard Farr and Victor Martins, will host the closing ceremonies and prize giving poolside in Coche.
Riders meeting at 12 pm on the beach, with first possible start of the Kicker & Slider Competition at 1 pm.

Ik zit er klaar voor! Laat maar komen dat seizoen

Excited for a second chance, the men came out charging for the double eliminations. Local Venezuelan, Felix Martins (North), was fired up, nailing stylish mobes and super powered slimchances, advancing three rounds before being taken out by Russian Petr Tyushkevich (Cabrinha). Petr was also on a roll advancing four rounds, taking out top ranked Venezuelan Leo Estredo (Slingshot), who struggled with his kite, before being halted by #3 in the world Etienne Lhote (F-One, France). And, to the disappointment of the crowd, Ruben Lenten (Slingshot, Netherlands) withdrew from the competition due to his ankle injury, saving himself for the rest of the tour.
Mikael Blomvall (JN Kites, Sweden) was also fired up after yesterday’s early round elimination, advancing three rounds before being halted by Cesar Portas (North, Spain). Mikael displayed a full range of powerful tricks, such as a kiteloop NIS, super high mobes with the kite incredibly low, to an awesome old school trick, a perfectly executed deadman, smack in front of the judge’s tower. Cesar, however, pulled out all the stops on his way to 4th place, unleashing a downloop KGB and slimchance, as well as, innovative moves he has been perfecting such as the mobe to blind and wrapped KGB, passing Randy Hereman (F-One, Netherlands), Etienne Lhote (F-One, France), Mikael Fernandez (RRD, France) and Mallory De la Villemarqué (North, France) before being squelched by Kevin Langeree (Naish, Netherlands). Kevin, having trained hard since last year, performed an incredible 14 moves in seven minutes, all with aerial passes – that’s one every 30 seconds!
PKRA 5
Mikael Fernandez, local Venezuelan Aquiles Zavala, and Reno Romeu (North, Brazil) all had good runs also. Fernandez started the day in round one and ended the day in 6th place for the event, displaying a well executed routine of powerful, aggressive tricks including his signature opening move, a high NIS, a kiteloop NIS 5, and an indy back to blind. Aquiles had the home crowds cheering as he battled his way through three rounds throwing off some killer L3’s, KGB’s, backs to wrapped and Hasslehaufs. Romeu made it five rounds, including a very close heat against Christian Holley (Best, UK), before succumbing to Fernandez and settling for 7th place overall; not a bad come back!
The women took to the water with a vengeance with Carol Freitas (Flexifoil, Brazil) pitted against Pauline Boussard (Wipika, France) and Devaki Mansion (Wipika, French Polynesia) up against Vika Soloveykina (Cabrinha, Russian Federation). Both pairs fought hard with Carol advancing, displaying nice variety including a beautiful back to toeside with surface pass. Vicka also advanced, landing a powerful blind judge, a trick never before performed in competition by a woman. Vicka continued her aggressive rampage for the next five rounds taking out a rash of top ranking riders such as Joe Wilson (Naish, UK), Bruna Kajiya (Naish, Brazil) , Susie Mai (Cabrinha, Germany) and Ania Grzelinska (North, Poland) before being halted by #1 in the world, Kristin Boese in the semifinals.
PKRA 6
Kristin was on fire today, ready to make a run for the winner’s podium. After halting Vicka’s onslaught with an arsenal of moves such as handle passes in both directions, front and railey’s to blind and indy tantrums, she took on Angela Peral (North, Spain). Angela showed off a nice Olly to wrapped and a kiteloop to blind, but was no match for Kristin’s variety of stylish, powerful tricks. Kristin was then poised to face Julie Simsar (Flexifoil, Turkey) and the final battle for first place.
With the wind waning and the competitors barely able to stay upwind, PKRA officials decided to abandon the men’s semifinal heat between Kevin Langeree and Alvaro Onieva and go into postponement. At 5:30 pm riders were released for the day due to insufficient wind. The men and women’s final double elimination heats will be held first thing tomorrow, followed by the competition’s second discipline, the kicker & slider event.
