MEN: 12 Men - see below | WOMEN: TBD - Tue 9/21


Maui, HI – (September 20, 2004) – The last stop of the "Fly To...Red Bull King of the Air" qualifier series began today at Kanaha Beach as 48 men competed for the coveted spots of the main event taking place at Ho'okipa Beach later this week. A limited 12 spots were available to the men and only 5 spots for the women, who compete tomorrow.
Consistent winds today were ideal for the competitors with as speeds topped at 30 knots but rarely dropped below 20.
Standouts today included; Chris Gilbert of Hood River, Oregon, Maui local, Garfield King, Adam Koch of Manhattan Beach, California, and newcomer, Tuterai Montaron of Bora Bora, Tahiti.
The impressive international field of competitors truly gave a worldly feeling to today's event. Tuterai Montaron, who lives and trains in Bora Bora, Tahiti, said in broken English and French," Maui has super strong wind, much more than the Polynesian Islands. It is great to come here and see what the rest of the kiteboard world is doing."
This year a series of international qualifiers, aptly named “Fly To… Red Bull King of the Air,†took place in such places as Mexico, Italy, Russia and Belgium to allow worldwide participation in the Maui main event. The winner of each regional event was given a spot in the Red Bull King of the Air main event.
Action starts tomorrow for the women at 12 p.m. where 24 women will compete for 5 limited spots for the Ho'okipa. Red Bull King of the Air begins Thursday, September 23, 2004 at Ho'okipa Beach Park on Maui's North Shore.
