CORVALLIS — Corvallis police have determined that a man who fell to his death during the weekend was attempting to fly with the aid of a large kite.

Michael Alan Gurwell, 43, of Corvallis was found after a fall from the external fire escape of the Benton Plaza Building in downtown Corvallis about 8:20 p.m. Saturday, said Detective Mark Posler of the Corvallis Police Department.

Gurwell was taken to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, where he died shortly after 9 p.m.

Police determined the death to be accidental. Gurwell apparently intended to jump from the fifth-floor fire escape of the Benton Plaza Building while holding a nylon kite with an 8-foot wingspan. He was found wearing a bicycle helmet and knee pads and crashed on the roof of the building’s second floor about 36 feet below.
