Triple-S Invitational Overview
The Triple-S Invitational is an annual freeride event held in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. This event features the best freeriders in the world and is held over a 7 day window to allow for the best conditions for each riding discipline. “Triple-S†stands for Surf, Slicks and Sliders, three of the reasons why Cape Hatteras has become one of the premier Kiteboarding locations in the world !
The Triple-S Invitational is an invite-only freeride event. This event will be a rider-based event, focusing on premium riding locations and conditions, and held over a longer time period to guarantee these exist so that the riders can perform at their peak levels. Some of the events, such as the welcome and awards parties, riding sessions at REAL and others close by will be spectator orientated, while others such as remote Slick Sessions, Ocean Sessions , etc will be offsite. To watch the entire event and view the results, the action packed video compilation of the event will be available later in the season in DVD format.
The Triple-S Invitational will be held from June 3rd through June 9th, choosing the riding discipline and format for the day. Riders will be judged on an entire event performance rather than heat by heat. 1/3 of the judging will be competitor based, adding a new factor and more rider representation to the overall results
Triple-S Surf
With over 70 miles of Atlantic coastline, facing in every direction on the compass, Cape Hatteras receives tons of swell and wind, and can combine them for perfect sideshore conditions no matter what the directions. Thanks to the shape of the island and the meeting of the North and South Atlantic Oceans right at our doorstep, Cape Hatteras has been nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic†and also “The Wave Magnetâ€. While Cape Hatteras can be surf kited in every wind direction, the two most popular directions are Northeast and Southwest winds. In these directions, you can ride downwind, surfing every wave you want for stretches of over 20 miles. Riding that many waves without ever having to go back upwind is a feeling so good, you think you'll be arrested and thrown in jail when you get back to the beach….
Triple-S Slicks
From the beginning of the sport of kiteboarding, Cape Hatteras has been world renowned for its flat water riding. Thousands of tiny grass islands in the shallow Pamlico Sound, create sheet glass, “Slick†conditions just downwind of them. These oily glass, “wakeboarding at dawnâ€, see your reflection in the water, even when its blowing 30 knots, riding conditions have made Cape Hatteras a lusted annual stop for every freerider on the planet. Imagine riding just downwind of waist high green grass in an oily slick and never hitting a piece of chop for the entire day…… In Cape Hateras, you don't need too imagine this because it happens every day…
Triple-S Sliders
Home of the world famous REAL Slider Park, Cape Hatteras is one of the best slider and kicker riding locations in the world. During the Triple-S Invitational, we will have all features of the park set up and ready to ride. Features like the new Red Bull Funbox. The John Wayne A-Frame, The Camel Toe, The Deathstar, and the slider that started it all,.. The Triple-S ! This REAL Slider Park has been featured in Kiteboarding DVDs like Ten-4, Unhooked and Unhooked 2, and Liquid Force's Relentless. During the Triple-S Invitational, we'll be riding the REAL Slider Park every day. Many of you have seen or ridden the REAL Slider Park over the past 5 seasons. Let us tell you that you won't believe what you see when you return to Cape Hatteras this year….
Weather
The weather during the beginning of June can be a mix of Southwest and Northeast winds, with Southwest normally being the more predominant of the two. Kite sizes can range from powered 17m's down to super-litt 5m's. During the Ten-4 DVD shoot held during the same time of year, pro riders used 7 and 8 meter kites for a week straight in 85 degree weather. Air and Water temps can range from the mid 60's to the mid 80's depending on the wind direction. Surf can range from waist high to double overhead. The one thing that holds consistent is the wind, as this is one of the best times of the year to hold an event like this.
Parties
Two parties are open for the Kiteboarding public during the Triple-S Invitational. Saturday, June 3rd is the Triple-S Invitational Welcome Party and Friday, June 9th is the Triple-S Invitational Awards Ceremony. Both events will have food, drink, music and great times. Both events are hosted at REAL Kiteboarding's Lesson Center, waterfront at “The Slickâ€. Come join the fun, rub elbows with the competitors, and enjoy the scenery. These should both be great evenings at REAL, as the sun sets over the Pamlico Sound.
