Hi all

I managed to spend about 30 minutes on the Naish UDS bar yesterday. the bar was connected to a 12m Naish Boxer. I mostly tried it on land but managed to get 1 or 2 runs in on the water in light wind conditions.

To read more basic information about the UDS bar, go to this post

My first impressions are :

1) When unhooked, the kite does not loose turning speed. It's possible to move the bar in ways not possible with a conventional bar.

2) You launch and freeride with the bar unhooked. If you want to jump you hook in and it functions as a normal bar.

3) I noticed that when unhooking and depowering, the kite flies even more to the edge of the window when in zenith. (12 o' clock) At times I thought the kite will overfly and drop behind me. It never dropped, even in light wind conditions. One wonders how older kites / kites that tend to overfly will behave in a similar position.

4) There is a bit of confusion with the 200% depower story, and this can be misleading. Basically what Naish tried to bring accross is that the bar depowers twice as much as a conventional bar. 100% depower will mean that there is no power in the kite, and the kite will not be able to fly. 200% depower is not possible.

5) It is really difficult to tell how much more the kite depowers with this bar, especially since I only spent a short while on the bar, and also due to the fact that I tested it in light wind conditions. But judging by the difference in power when fully depowered on the chicken loop vs fully depowered when unhooked, I'd say that one gains an additional 25% of depower on your kite.
