Er zijn al menige discussies over gevoerd; 20 knopen in de tropen is niet hetzelfde als 20 knopen bij ons op de Noordzee. Dat heeft met de winddichtheid te maken. Ofwel meer of minder moleculen in de lucht waarbij meer moleculen meer kracht hebben dan minder moleculen. Progression heeft daar een leuk artikel over geschreven:

The wind you feel blowing on your face at different locations may feel the same (the wind recorded on a wind meter will also read the same) but when you hit the water your 9m kite feels pretty under powered in Cumbuco and serious powered up in Cape Town. Why is this? We typically measure the strength of the wind using wind speed but just as important is wind density. A low density wind will not have as much punch as the higher density variety. Typically hotter locations will have lower density winds but its not quite that straight forward, Cape Town is a pretty warm place but there its the colder water which means the wind is far denser, giving Cape Town some of the most extreme and powerful wind.
So what does this mean to us as kitesurfers?
Firstly, one type of wind is not better or worse than the other, they both have their positive and negative points.

Ik heb de discussie zelf ook menigmaal gevoerd en de echte vraag die opdoemt is natuurlijk; hoeveel is dat verschil dan?! Is de wind dan 2x zo sterk in nederland vergeleken met Cumbucu? Je kan hier de luchtdichtheid berekenen: http://www.baranidesign.com/air-density/air-density.htm
Mocht je niet z'n zin hebben in al dat rekenwerk geven we je een voorbeeld. De luchtdichtheid in NL vandaag was 1322 kg/m3 en op de Kaapverdische eilanden was het vandaag 1172 k/m3. Dat is een verschil van 12,8%. Ofwel bij 20 knopen zou je een 9 op kunnen zetten op Wijk aan Zee en een 10.5 op de kaapverdische bij dezelfde wind
