Green light for the European Speed Championships in Ireland

With a promising southerly flow, the green light has been given to start the European Speed Championships in Dungarvan, Ireland from Sunday 01/11 until Saturday 07/11. Please find below important information about insurance and equipment transport, which needs to be booked until 26/10 latest ! Details above on-site registration on Sunday 01/11 as well as an updated event programe will be published as soon as possible. Event registration will be closedon 26/10 18:00 hours. Please make sure that we have received your registration by then to take part in this event. INSURANCE Every competitor (without exception) will have to provide proof of 3rd party insurance to the value of €6.5m or GBP5m. It is vital that all competitors check their own insurance policy and ensure it covers them for sailing in Irish waters and in a professional event, many policies have geographical limitations and are also limited to amateur sporting activities and of course if this applies to your policy then you are uninsured for this event. In the event that someone is unable to provide the documents to the satisfaction of the organisers, membership of the Irish Windsurfing Association and the Irish Kitesurfing Association will be available on site; this will provide you with the requisite insurance cover. You need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it 1) Use of bus & equipment transport at cost of €60.00 return (no single fare option, no split bus and transport option – for organisational reasons) – yes or no Dublin Airport Radissson – Park Hotel Dungarvan 1900hrs 31/10: Equipment transport will pass by arrivals area of Dublin Airport at 1500hrs, 1700hrs and 1900hrs on 31/10 stopping for as long as they are allowed, no more than 10 minutes – it will also be present in the car park of The Radisson throughout the afternoon until 1845hrs on 31/10 Coach transfer will be from The Radisson, leaving at 1900hrs on 31/10 The provision of this service at this price requires 34 users or more so it is vital we have responses by close of business 26/10/09 Note: for the vast majority of people, walking your gear to the Radisson should be feasible; it’s a short enough walk. Park Hotel Dungarvan – Dublin Airport 1000hrs 08/11: Return journeys are on 08/11 leaving at 1000hrs. The equipment transfer truck will be present from 1800hrs the previous evening 07/11 – all gear will need to be loaded by 0930hrs 08/11 Users of the above service are advised that insurance of their own kit is their own responsibility. Users are also advised to satisfy themselves with the loading arrangement of their own gear within the truck. We will be advising the driver that the contents are valuable and fragile but as with any freight, the onus to insure contents is with the owner. Spaces are limited to 55 people and it has been indicated that a lot of people are bringing partners and children this year so don’t hold off on confirming your seat. We absolutely need to confirm numbers for this service by 26/10/09 to see if we can put it on, as if we can’t, everyone needs time to arrange their own transport. We repeat, if we don’t have 34 users confirmed by close of business we will not be arranging the transport in question.

Competitor information

The event is been arranged on a rollover basis with the first week being treated as the most likely to take place, unless the forecast is really unsuitable the event will take place during this week, however having learnt our lesson last year we have the option to postpone until more suitable conditions look likely. This arrangement gives everyone the best chance of having a great weeks racing so we hope everyone accepts the logic behind it.

There is kit transport arranged from Dublin Airport for anyone not wanting to hire vans or the like. A pickup point within walking distance of the hotel will be arranged for the two days before the event with the gear being transported down on the morning of the event in time for registration. There may be a slight charge but it will be very small if there is one at all.

A large marquee has been arranged with allocated space for each competitor to store their equipment, within reason of course. This will be secured and have security every evening from 18.00 until skippers meeting the following morning.

The first day is set aside for registration, rigging, course inspection and race briefing.

Lunch will be provided in the event marquee for all competitors and additional food will be available to buy on site throughout the day. Coffee and tea will be provided to competitors throughout the day.

The racing schedule is dependant on the tides and is outlined below.

Discounted rates have been agreed with two local hotels, The Park Hotel for the windsurfers and The Gold Coast Hotel for the kitesurfers. The reason for this is twofold, kitesurfers will be able to avail more readily of the waterfront setting of the gold coast than the windsurfers with specialised speedboards and we also want to spread the accommodation around.

There will be a few shops in the marquee selling spares and extra woollies for the French.

We have a full time photographer in his own RIB on the water. A film production crew are producing a ½ hour program as part of a series on adventure sports. We have a helicopter on standby for a few hours aerial coverage and are advised that the national broadcasters are interested in running a few segments on the event. All in all the media coverage is going to be huge pleasing the camera hogs and sponsored sailors alike.

There is a no wind day mornings entertainment arranged with Elite Paintball and discounted green fees have been agreed with Dungarvan Golf Club for those too mature to act like teenagers for a few hours.

The opening and closing parties are free of charge for competitors with a limited supply of free drinks as well.

The closing party will also be the prize giving with a prize fund of €10,000.00 with plenty of additional prizes on offer from event supporters.
