They’re only just back but we couldn’t resist asking some of the main figures from the event what they thought of the first ever Wave Masters!!! | |
Julien Sudrat I think we were all very lucky, 10 days freeriding with mates, as much surf as kite! I knew when I got to Sal that the conditions wouldn’t disappoint. And the swell just rolled in one morning big time! Jerome and Pascal Laborde (local riders) said it was the best swell of the whole winter!!! So I started pumping up my GTO 11m2, all the while checking out this big monster wave that was rolling in over to the right of the spot, a left tight up against the rocks. 3, 4, 5 metres? Better oriented than the spot at La Pointe, it’s side-off 20 - 25 knots! 2 hours riding and I was really becoming aware of the true potential we have with kites. I used my freestyle twin tip, 137 / 32cm, TFC 5 and 6cm fins with 23 metre lines! I won’t forget this session in a hurry! This kind of thing is right up my street, no heats and the riders judge the riders. Long live the Wave Masters and I hope some sponsors get behind the project very soon… Malik Bouchenafa This first competition / trip was a beautiful event!!! We all had a great time, we all had a great laugh and we all had a great ride… Everbody’s level went up day by day and there was a fantastic feeling between us! I hope this won’t be the only wave competition… I think it was more trip than competition, the judging was very subjective and I think mostly it showed the huge potential for kites in waves. Hope you like the photos when you see them!!! |

Herve Boure I think it was a success, someone had to organise a wave competition one day because there’s nothing better than riding the waves. I get the impression freestyle is slowly strangling itself and no one’s sure which way to go next. The ambience between the riders was superb, far removed from the normal competition thing. We all really felt this was a trip… The fact that the riders judge each other is original, and true enough, who better to judge riders than riders. Maybe other competition organisers should think about that. One negative all the same, the price was well steep!!! I know I had to tighten my belt regarding what other competitions I’ll do this year to be here… I hope the effort the riders put in will bear fruit in attracting sponsors! Coming 4th at Cape Verde was a big challenge for me, specially since I’m goofy and this wave wasn’t at all to my favour… Fiji on the other hand is completely opposite and I’ll be in my element!!! |
Sky Solbach The Wave Masters in Cape Verde saw the biggest waves ever kited!!! It’s surreal to come all this way to the end of the earth and be given that just for us to play in!!! The slightly off-shore wind meant a certain amount of adaptation by some riders. But we all had incredible waves and judging a winner of the prize practically impossible… I know that regardless of the results we all went home totally stoked to have ridden some of the most beautiful waves in the world… Peter Trow The Wave Masters was unquestionably the coolest event I’ve participated in… It’s not just great waves and good wind that makes an exceptional event, most of all it’s the incredible atmosphere among the riders!!! The fact that it’ S not organised like a classic competition and looks more like an extended expression session in the waves made the whole thin immediately more relaxed, de-stressed… It was fantastic, amusing, cool and everyone went big! The Wave Masters proved how incredibly far the level has progressed in waves these last few years and how it’s probably the most exciting aspect to the sport nowadays… I really hope the Wave Masters will mark a new departure for kitesurf events!!! |
