Using the experience of their 4 years in the business and succession of big champion riders, the RSCustom workshop has put the finishing touches to the new range of kitesurf boards from Takoon : The Takoon Interstate series ! The board is available in various sizes, Flysurf.com chose the smallest, Interstate 33, for their test. Derived from rider Herve Boure’s competition twin tip with the added savoir-faire of shaper Raphael Selles, this little board is a BIG revelation…
On the beach….. Make : Takoon Model : Interstate 33 Length : 139cm Width : 33.8cm Weight : 3.1kg
Construction : RVC carbon-glass core + wood
Rails : The rails are low, also round and narrowing to end very slightly concave.
Extras : 2 adjustable ergonomic foot straps with 2 optional stance settings, 2 thick ergonomic foot pads with heel grips, 4 Takoon 5cm fins, no handle but inserts provided. All the fittings require a cruciform / Philips screwdriver !
Design / Finishing : Mainly red with a cool design, looks as though it’s designed to appeal to the widest possible majority of riders. Simple but very good finish, not over-elaborate but some nice detailing such as the little indents near the edges (like run-offs) to help you centre-grab your board. Shame there’s no handle.
Price : 790 Euros all in / around £500
Shaping / Design objectives : The scoop is designed in such a way as to give maximum speed and control, even when high speed radical carving. It benefits from a new system, AFC (Asymmetric Flex Control) which gives you maximum flex just when you need it : in those high-pressure carves and at top speed. The AFC system means great ride comfort and easy control. Its advantages : Speed, light weight, great holding, wave riding, excellent potential for riding ‘over-powered’, extreme comfort through carves because of the AFC system. The Interstate is the board to suit all styles !
On the water….. Accessibility / ease of learning : Like wearing slippers ! Not one ‘tester’ had a problem right from their first runs, even those used to something a bit bigger. It’s very easy and you find the pressure points very quickly.
Glide : One of its real strong points, all the test panel found it excellent. Its speed (plus great hold and control) gives it great pop for your jumps.
Carving / upwind / edge work : Very good hold, no problem getting upwind. The hold is helped by the fact that it doesn’t slap and is easy to control. Getting into a jump is consistently exciting and very dependable, even at top speed.
Manoeuvrability : No wallowing, rides well flat and on the edge. Easy and comfortable to steer, none of which takes anything away from the excitement. No sign of slap, is this the AFC effect we read about in the design blurb ? Nice, fluid handling, relatively soft whether you’re carving wide or on the spot. Makes you think it must be great in waves, for some pure wave riding… And that light weight doesn’t exactly put you off either !
Conclusion….. General description of sensations / feeling… Not often you find a board that’s so much to everyone’s liking ! There must be some little niggle ! Only time will tell ! The Interstate 33 handles smoothly and comfortably, sharp and exciting, fast and totally controllable, good for freestyle and for great carving. It must be said though, this is a small board that won’t suit complete beginners or big sized riders in light winds. Still, it’s got great range and it’s hugely versatile when you take everything into account.
Pluses : Everything ! Flysurf.com tip : Any criticism welcome ! Likewise a handle !
Target market : Lighter weight intermediates and experienced riders, any size of expert. Performance / Design objectives : Nothing to say !
