The people of Cesme live within the remnants of Erathrai. In Cesme, where the Lydian, Persian, Pergamon (Bergama) Romen and Byzantine civilizations ruled in the ancient times, now lives within the remnants of Erathrai (ildiri). One of the main factors Cesme's seaport gained much importance is it's the closest and safest route between the Chios Island and the Anatolian shores. For that reason the seaport has kept the trade running for many centuries. During the last quarter of 13th. century and early 14th.century effects of the Genoeses, who had an important role in the trade of Anatolia, can be seen. During the same period it was once ruled by Çakabey, this first domination by Turks was only for a short time. During the early 14th Century after the raids by Aydinogullari the seaport of Cesme was converted to a naval base. |

Later, the region was ruled by Umur Bey. Umur Bey didn't want to exclude the Genoese but he wanted to control and set trade conditions on his own terms so he settled the Genoese in Chios Island. After the Genoese settled in the Chios island in 1330 the seaport of Cesme became even more important. Ottoman Forces occupied Cesme during the sultanate of Bayezit I. for the first time. But after the Ankara war in 1402, Timur gave Cesme back to Aydinogullari. During all these years Izmir was a small market place for western Anatolian products, however, in the late 17th century, trading in Izmir and the seaport of Izmir became superior and thus the important role of Cesme as a main trade route came to an end. In the 18th century, as a result of the Ottomans defending and befriending Poland against the Russians and the Russians' plan to expand their territory through the Ottoman land, in order to reach the Aegean Sea, the Ottoman/Russian wars in 1768-1774 erupted. Russians sent their ships that were in the Baltic Sea, to the Aegean Sea to fight the Ottomans. Though the Ottomans lost the first battle, Ottoman galleons defeated Russian naval forces in the Aegean Sea with the second battle under the command of Cezayirli Hasan Pasha, on 22 October 1770.Ottomans had the state system for many centuries but during the sultanate of Sultan Abdulaziz some changes were made in this system in 1864.Just as in many other Aegean seaside villages, there was a larger population of Greeks rather than Turkish people in Çeþme as well. But during and after the War of Independence, Greeks moved to Greece and later populations were exchanged between the nations. |
