After a successful first day of qualifying rounds in the kitesurfing medal event on Thursday (October 14), athletes and organisers yesterday had to settle for a day full of anticipation, minus the action, due to a lack of consistent wind conditions.

Winds yesterday averaged 8 to 12 knots at Perth’s Mosman Beach, which was well below the intensity needed to commence the quarter finals of the A$25,000 kitesurfing competition.

With remaining competition days now condensed to two, the kitesurfing event promises spectators an even more thrilling, action-packed, aerial extravaganza, subject to improved conditions today and tomorrow.

Contesting the championship will be Perth’s own Ryland Blakeney, 22, of Scarborough, who achieved the overall highest score in Thursday’s preliminary heats.  Fellow Aussies in the running include Daniel Walstab, 20, Rich Stenning, 30, and Perth chiropractic student Adam Ratajewski, 18, who will be up against world number one Aaron Hadlow, 16, of the UK and Ruben Lenten, 16, of the Netherlands.
