New Southside Wind Sensor Goes Live !
REAL kiteboarding is proud to announce the release of our new “Southside” wind sensor co-sponsored by REAL kiteboarding, Ikitesurf, Iwindsurf and the Frisco Pier.

This sensor is located at the end of the Frisco Pier on the “Southside” of Hatteras Island. The new Frisco Pier Wind Sensor will provide accurate wind speed and direction readings for ocean side kitting and windsurfing along the beaches of laceName w:st="on">HatteraslaceName> laceType w:st="on">VillagelaceType> and Frisco.

This stretch has become very poplar for kiteboarding over the past several seasons. Consistent SW winds are perfect along this stretch of beach for long downwinders with excellent surf conditions. Launching from the western end of laceName w:st="on">HatteraslaceName> laceType w:st="on">VillagelaceType> across from the Hatteras Ferry Docks, kiteboarders can take miles of downwind action in the surf, ending at the Frisco Pier.

This downwind run has become a popular one, especially in the Spring and Summer months when SW winds pipe into the high teens and twenties almost every day. Summertime water temps are in the high 70’s to low 80’s. Riders use kites between 9m and 17m during these months. If the wind is SW, you can often count on using one size larger compared to what kites riders are using at “The Slick” in Waves further to the north. So if you are getting overpowered on your 9m at The Slick, you can head south to the “Southside” and ride your 13m fully comfortable !

During the winter months, from December through March, the SW winds resurface and blow with higher velocity and “punch,” often requiring kites in the 5-8m range. These winter SW winds also bring warmer temperatures, often in the mid 70’s. Water temps in the winter normally hover in the mid to upper 50’s requiring a full 3mm or 4mm wetsuit, but no booties or gloves.

This new wind sensor will provide extremely accurate wind speed and direction readings for W, SW, S, SE and E winds. This is when the riding is at its best along this stretch of coastline. Once the wind goes North of East or West (NW, N, NE), the wind speeds will become sheltered by tall beach front homes, making conditions and wind readings unfavorable at this site.
