Beato was taken from us yesterday at West Beach in Adelaide. He was a champ, he loved the water spending most of his time either surfing, body boarding or anything that involved water.
My mates were out yesterday skurfing ie being pulled on a surfboard behind a tinny. They had just left the marina at West Beach when a few dolphins had decided to join them. They thought that it was gd to see dolphins cos that usually means no sharks. A few minutes later Beato was in the water, the dolphins had gone and suddenly a shark grabbed him. Another 5m white pointer joined in. He had no hope, they swung oars at the sharks but one took him underwater, under the boat.
Its a shame that its gonna take my mate being killed by a shark to get more government support in adelaide. At the moment the adelaide metropolitation region is patrolled by a plane on the weekends. Surely in summer the beach should be patrolled on weekdays aswell, especially so close to christmas. They have known that sharks upto 5m have been on our main beaches for the last month, why was nothing done earlier?? I just cant come to grips with it.
I spoke to his dad and mum today, they want a positive to come out of this horrific accident. Surely a better tagging system with a detection of sharks coming close to shore.
This spot is only a kilometre from probably the most popular kiting spot in adelaide in a seabreeze. The spot where the attack occured was actually the beach on the end of my street where i live and i usually ride to not ride with the huge crowd at Henley.
I feel for Adam, Andrew and Ty who had to live thru this horrific incident, but in a way i envy them, as i couldnt spend the last minute with a mate.
Things are going to change in Adelaide, we must make things happen.
