Abel Lago and his wave boards!
Abel Lago is an unequalled rider from Tarifa and his reputation, be it in Spain or throughout the world is not to be done. He’s got a specific style at surfing and works a lot on boards development dedicated for waveriding…
Do you shape your wave boards ?
« No, in fact I am a testor, bringing ideas and feedback on manufactured boards. Shaper is Ricardo Medina, the God of Shaping ! »
What is your opinion on surfing with a kite and a directional or a TT ?
« It’s been more than 60 years we’ve been using the same type of boards in the world of surf with tiny variations at shape level. This is why I believe for kite we should get inspired by this wonderful experience. On TT, we may surf waves without problem of course, but neither rails, neither volumes, nor scoops are adapted to stay in the wave. »
Could you give us significant technical details concerning wave board shapes ?
« I think to surf the wave well, we have to use wave power at it maximum and the one of the kite at minimum by being underpowered..
This is how we need a board that is fast and not voluminous that allows to chain turns and grip. Directional surf boards wear three big back fins, they allow a great upwind and they also have a volume that allows to navigate with smaller kites, by very light wind or very irregular wind.»
