Almost two weeks from the kick off of the Jim Beam Cabo Frio Kiteboard World Cup, 3rd stage of the 2005 KPWT, and we already can announce a beautiful competition board.
Indeed, this specific event, mixing freestyle and wave riding is attracting more and more pro riders everyday on the online pre-registrations.
Sure that the Wave Masters session scheduled as an aside competition additionally represents a particular challenge for most riders : it promises a thrilling fight on the water between the waves specialists and the freestyle stars, nonetheless highly skilled in wave riding!…
The competition board is therefore composed of a variety of riders, in terms of nationalites – 12 countries represented so far ! - and styles – wave riders, freestylers.
Needless to say, the members of the 2005 KPWT top 6 will be there : face to the 2005 leader, Mickael Fernandez (FR), we’ll thus find Antoine Auriol (FR) and Charles Deleau (FR), 2nd equal in the world ranking; yet the menace might come from the italian Stefano Maselli, 4th in the ranking, revelation of the year! The young freestyler Thomas Coquelet (FR), ranked 5th , will on this event have to prove that he’s as good in waves as on flat water, and beware of Ruben Salvador (SP) newcomer on the KPWT and ranked 6th , who astonished everybody during the last event in Turkey.
Face to them, the best brazilian riders will defend their country : among others, we expect the members of the national Top 5, Marcelo Cunha, Reno Romeu, Bernardo Monteiro, Marc Conrad.
On the wave specialists side, we’ll find riders coming from all over the world : Hervé Bouré (FR), 2003 & 2004 Wave Masters champion, Peter Petersen from South Africa, Nick Toussaint from Mexico, John Matthews from Maui, Pablo Llanos from Argentina…
Others nationalities will be highly represented : Portugal with Nuno Figueiredo and Tiago Rocha, Russia with Evgueni Novozheev, Spain with the local champion Ivan Vergel, Australia with Miguel Willis, etc…
To finish, the women board is, like in the last stage in Turkey, composed of confirmed talents, like Noelia Nunez, the spanish leader of the 2005 world ranking, Julie Simsar (FR/Tur) who won the last event, and of course the 2004 world champion Gisela Pulido. Face to them, the Brazilian Champion, Carol Freitas, might nonetheless bring changes in the present ranking…

This event will be a premiere in Cabo Frio, wich has never hosted any international kitesurf
event so far.The Jim Beam Cabo Frio World Cup is the fourth event of 2005 saison.
Launched in 1999, the Kiteboard Pro World Tour is the professional world cup of Kiteboarding
that promotes the sport and its star riders on an international level. The series of 7 events
crowns the men and women world champions, for Senior and Junior divisions.
The Jim Beam Cabo Frio world cup will feature the world’s top 32 professional kiteboarder’s
men and 10 professional Women.
Event Dates : September 2nd to 10th
September 2nd to 3rd : registrations 2 to 6pm / 3rd 7pm opening ceremony
September 4th to 9th : daily competitions – skippers meeting at 10am / activities at night
September 10th : final main event freestyle / 7pm : prize giving ceremony
The city and area :
Cabo Frio is located at 150 km North of Rio de Janeiro. Famous for its long beaches and its
white sand dunes, Cabo Frio is the most developed city of the “Sun Coastâ€. The Portuguese
built the Sao Mateus Fortress, in 1620. It names the city’s most beautiful and famous beach,
the “Praia do Forte†(Fortress’ beach).
The spot of Praia Forte, Cabo Frio :
Here, the clear waters are an invitation to practice of water sports. Indeed, Cabo Frio is a
paradise with 13km of beach, one of the best place for kiteboard being Praia do Forte. Other
spots are close to this main beach : Praia das Dunas, Praia do Foguete, Praia de Cabo Frio,
and Praia da Barra. Located downtown, Praia do Forte has many bars and restaurants
around, besides the kiosks on the sand.
The wind and wave conditions :
Good easterly wind and wave spot, 5 at 6 windy days per week between 15 to 35 knots.
Laguna at 10-20 min with flat water.
Classic break sandy bottom, direction left, fast, and powerful, length normal (50 to 150m)
good day normal (50 to 150m).
All tides, swell size starts working at 1.0m-1.5m / 3ft-5ft and holds up to 2.5m+ / 8ft+ swell
direction East, South.

Race team :.
Ian Young (AUS) will be the race director, he has 6 years experience in kiteboarding and
previously managed various kiteboard competitions. Francisco Costa (Por) will be the Head
Judge. He will manage the judging team, composed of Matthew Smith (New Zealand) Jan
Christoph (Ger) and Neil Merad (FR) as judges.
Disciplines :
This international event will be composed of a main discipline and possible other races :
• Freestyle & Wave - 25000$ prize money - Main discipline : The winner will gain
1000pts, taken into account in the world overall ranking. The race will be conducted
as follows :
a) 100% freestyle if no waves
b) wind sideshore to sideoffshore : 100% wave + kick out (no jump)
c) wind onshore : 50% Freestyle / 50% wave
d) wind sideshore to sideonshore :100% wave ( 1 starboard jump, 1 porttack jump)
• Wave Masters session - 2000 $ prize money
For the riders interested, we’ll organize a Wave Masters session, one day during the event
(date to be announced according to the riding conditions) at Massambaba, a 100% wave spot
at about 10 kms north of Cabo Frio :
- no extra registration fee
- The entry is reserved for the riders registered and participating in the main
freestyle/wave event, men and women - 20 seats maximum (selected out of prequalifications
if necessary)
- 2000 $ prize money and specific official ranking
- photo / video shooting
• Extra discipline TBC (Best Trick or Speed Crossing) – 3000 $ prize money
Format of the main wave - freestyle event :
The competition will be conducted in heats as follows :
1st round : heats of four competitors – One/ One if possible
2nd round : heats of four competitors – One / One if possible
quarter finals : heats of two competitors
semi finals : heats of two competitors
final : heat of two competitors
Winner and Loser brackets take 2 days to finish.

during this 2005 season. With their various 2004 victories (Jim Beam kiteboard World Cup in
Turkey, Alcatel Kitesurf Pro in Nouméa, etc...), they proved their wide range of talents and
regularity. Nonetheless, needless to say, they will have to face many other talentuous
champions...
