KTA - Filipijnen - Boracay / 19 - 23 februari
2014 sees the 5th season for the KTA on Boracay, and as always are extremely excited to once again be invited to be bring Asia’s largest Kiteboarding competitions to the number one island of the Philippines. This seasons event will follow suit of the previous year’s boasting freestyle, TT and RB class racing, which will once again attract some of not only the Top Asian riders but some of the top riders in the World, plus of course we are all looking forward to seeing the ‘groms’ racing again this year after their inaugural blast into the event last year. Boracay is not the unofficial birth place of the KTA Kite Kids for nothing
It is fantastic to once again be supported this year as our event hosts role the luxury property development that is Aqua Boracay by Yoo.
Aqua Boracay by Yoo is Bulabogs most prestigious beachside residential development on the world-famous Boracay Island, many times named the Best Island in the World by international travel and leisure magazines.
Aqua Boracay by Yoo is set amongst 16,000 square meteres of lush tropical rainforest, positioned on the heart of Bulabog Beach, the watersports haven of the island.
Aqua Boracay by Yoo is the first resort residence designed by the Yoo design studio in the Philippines. Based in London, the award winning design, marketing and branding company has been working with international developers on a multitude of residential, hotel, and commercial projects throughout Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, North and South America, and the Middle East.
The KTA for one is looking forward to seeing the progress that has been made since out last competition visit in early 2013. The completion will carry an equipment prize value of USD 15,000 split equally between the Freestyle RB and TT classes for the top three positions male and female.
De KTA in Borocay is ook gelijk de afsluitende stop voor dit jaar helaas, door onrusten in Thailand zien sponsors er niets in om dit jaar een stops te doen in Thailand.
Meer updates over Borocay volgende week.

Day 1:
Formula kite and Twin Tip racers kick off action on day one KTA season finale on Boracay
Bulabog Beach – An international roster of leading Formula and Twin Tip racers ripped on the flat waters of Boracay Island on day one of Kiteboard Tour Asia’s (KTA) Philippines event, marked by tight and exhilarating contests that threw up a number of edge-of-the-seat photo-finishes.
Leading Formula kite racer Astrid Berz (SUI) cleaned up with five bullets out of six after a faltering start, leaving her overall top on day one. Boracay-based Kathrin Borgwardt (GER) outpointed Berz in the day’s first race after the Swiss rider conceded she had made timing error and was late to the start line.
But Thailand’s Narapichit “Yo” Pudla did not put a foot wrong all day in the men’s raceboard class, scoring bullets in all six races despite being pushed all the way by Ken Nacor (PHI) in the changeable conditions that started at around 15kts onshore and dropped to 7kts before picking up again in late afternoon.
Nacor – who was absent from the first two KTA stops in Phuket, Thailand, and Bintan, Indonesia – even at one point threatened to upset Pudla’s unblemished record in the raceboard class when he led the 23-year-old Thai in one race, made up of three laps of the track.
Yet Pudla was able to reel in and pass Nacor on the triangular course, consisting of a short up-wind leg with two broad reaches across the turquoise water inside the reef off palm-fringed Bulabog beach.
Pudla, who was also competing in the Twin Tip division which was raced alternately from the Formula kite class, was his usual jovial self and elated as ever by his commanding lead in the season finale at KTA Philippines Boracay Extreme, where Blue Orange Ville is the presenting sponsor and Aqua Boracay by Yoo the host.
“It’s a good set of results, so it’s happy days,” said a beaming Pudla. “I’m a bit tired after all the racing in both classes. But it’s great fun being out there all the time.”
Pudla was not quite so flawless in the Twin Tip class, crashing to a surprising seventh place in the opening race. But with the discards kicking in after four races he was able to discount the poor opening led the division overall with four other bullets and a second place.
Philippines riders Doque De los Santos and Louie “Bong” Fernando were snapping at his heals around the two laps of the track raced by the Twin Tip riders, and finished the day second and third in the overall standings.
In the women’s Twin Tip division 37-year-old Borgwardt totally dominated the proceedings scoring six bullets out of six, leading the overall standings from second-placed Liezl Tio (PHI). The German rider had been forced to play second fiddle to Lisa Nikitina (UKR) in the first two rounds of the KTA season, but the 23-year-old is missing from the Philippines event.
In the women’s raceboard class it was Borgwardt who was forced to play catch-up to Berz, fresh from a podium placing at the Formula kite South and Middle American Championships in Colombia earlier in the month.
“The course here is a little short, particularly the upwind leg,” said Berz. “It means there’s not much of a down-wind leg either. But there’s nothing much else you can do here. It is what it is. It’s certainly tough on the legs. But I’m having fun and the people here are warm, nice people.”
Day2:
Freestylers go big on day two of KTA Philippines before dropping breeze lets course board racers on the track
Bulabog Beach – Freestyle riders got their chance to throw down their powered moves in the opening men’s heats on day two of the Kiteboard Tour Asia (KTA) Philippines event that will wrap-up the 2013-14 season.
But after six heats in near-perfect flat-water conditions with winds that started out at 15kts to 18kts, the breeze dropped to the point where the judges had to abandon the seventh heat. A second attempt to re-run the heat later in the afternoon, an all Polish duel between Victor Borsuk and Przemyslaw Mikolay, suffered a similar fate.
Yet Borsuk had time to continue where he had left off in the morning, cleanly landing a number of powered tricks that included a Back Mobe, 313, and a Back-to-Blind with Air Pass using his 14m kite.
In the opening heats 17-year-old Jaka Komocar (SLO), runner-up in the second stop on the KTA at Bintan, Indonesia, looked like a strong contender as he took down local rider Eddian Manuel (PHI) with a series of stomped Blind Judge 3s, NISs, 315s and Back-to-Blinds.
Boracay-based Andrey Salnik (UKR) was similarly clean with his Slim Chances, Front-to-Blinds and Back Mobes that saw off a challenge from Pierre Vogel (FRA). Britain’s veteran rider David Shields was equally ruthless with Benji Bernard-Mettil (FRA) who suffered from being slightly underpowered on his 12m kite as he rode in the lighter airs closer to the beach.
“I’m a former windersurfer so I could see the wind was a little less closer to the beach,” said Shields. “I concentrated in staying higher in the [competition] box where the wind was better. It’s my first competition riding bindings. They take a bit of getting used to, but the pop is so much better and the landings more positive. I had a good heat.”
With the wind dropping the competition director set a slightly longer race course than the opening series and got the Twin Tip riders on the water on day two of the KTA Philippines Boracay Extreme contest, with Blue Orange Ville as the presenting sponsor and Aqua Boracay by Yoo the host.
The men and women Twin Tip riders, racing two laps of the track set inside the reef off Boracay’s Bulabog Beach, put up their biggest 17m kites. For Narapichit “Yo” Pudla (THA), who finished the first day as class leader, the decision to use a 13m kite did not pay off and he trailed to third behind Louie “Bong” Fernando (PHI) and Doque De los Santos (PHI).
Kathrin Borgwardt (GER) secured her grip on top of the Twin Tip ladder with a victory over Rahel Holliger (SUI) and Okyeon Kim (KOR) in the day’s sole race in the class. The German rider, who has been trailing in the wake of Astrid Berz (SUI), clawed back a little of her deficit against the experienced racer racking up two bullets and second in the day’s three course-board races.
“No doubt Astrid [Berz] is still faster than me,” said Borgwardt. “But the good thing is I’m getting closer to her now. And if she makes tiny mistakes it gives me a chance to get past her. There’s a lot of seagrass and plastic on the course, especially towards the downwind mark. I had to clear from my fins a couple of times, but Astrid had the same problem in the second race and crashed.”
In the men’s division Thailand’s Chanon “Jack” Phrakaew had similar problems but was pleased with his trio of third place finishes behind his training partner Pudla, who scored another three bullets to add to his growing tally, and Ken Nacor (PHI).
“There’s really a lot of seaweed in the water,” said Phrakaew. “It means you can’t go at full speed. You have to look out very carefully and try to dodge around the patches. Still, I fell a couple of times because of it. I’m just trying to keep my third place behind ‘Yo’ and Ken [Nacor].”
Day 3:
Freestyle winners anointed at the end of single elimination contest on day three of KTA Philippines
Bulabog Beach – The leading freestyle riders on the Kiteboard Tour Asia (KTA) continued the dominance they had shown at the last stop in Indonesia by clinching top spots in the single elimination heats in strong winds and flat water.
Dutch rider Dylan van der Meij cruised to victory in the final heat over Mike Blomvall (SWE) with high-powered tricks and smooth landings in the shallow turquoise waters inside the reef off Boracay’s Bulabog Beach.
The Swede suffered the misfortune of a 9m kite that deflated in a hard crash, but was able to swap it out in for a 10m kite in less than a minute. But the moves thrown down by van der Meij, a day after his nineteenth birthday, were simply too strong for Blomvall’s strong challenge.
Even in the gusty conditions with winds hit 25kts, van der Meij stomped a spectacular array powered tricks that included a Low Mobe, Blind Judge 3, Kite Loop NIS and an “S” Mobe that had the audience huddled on the beach cheering in appreciation.
“I was on the edge of comfortable in the conditions,” said van der Meij. “I was fully depowered on my 10m kite. But it makes you do your tricks with more power, though the water also got choppier during the heats which made things even more challenging. I’m so happy with my first place because there are so many good guys here.”
The awe-inspiring excitement of day three came after several days of intense Formula kite and Twin Tip racing at the KTA Philippines Boracay Extreme, with Blue Orange Ville as the presenting sponsor and Aqua Boracay by Yoo the host.
Brazilian number two Estefania Rosa dos Santos, 26, maintained her grip on the top spot when she saw off a challenge from Kelly Schouten (NED) with a series of smooth tricks that included a Blind Judge, 313, and a Shifty 3, even though she suffered several hard crashes in the tough conditions.
“I so happy,” said dos Santos. “I won all my heats even in the gusty conditions and I was still able to do my ‘air passes’. In these conditions you really need to judge what you are going to do very carefully. So I was doing tricks that I was sure to land.”
By contrast Schouten, 25, who lost to dos Santos in the “super-final” of the KTA Indonesia event when the Brazilian landed a remarkable five handle passes in the air, knew she had to gamble to have any chance of winning.
“I thought ‘I have to go big, or I’m going home’ because I’ve seen what she can do,” said Schouten. “But in my efforts to go for it I had a couple of big crashes. It wasn’t my best heat. But overall I’m happy because the rest of the day was good, or good enough.”
With the single elimination rounds complete race officials got the Formula kite, Twin Tip, Weekend Warriors and Kids out on the water in the blustery conditions. While the wind dropped slightly racers were out on their 7m, 9m and 11m kites.
But the stronger winds upset the established order of the opening series of races. Ken Nacor (PHI) overhauled Narapichit “Yo” Pudla (THA) in both Formula kite races of the day, ending the 23-year-old’s unbeaten run.
“I like the strong wind, whereas I struggle when it’s light,” said Nacor. “I stay here in Boracay so I’m used to high winds and small kites when I’m training. ‘Yo’ is my friend, so it’s great to beat him. I know he’s a good hunter and waiting to pick you off, especially upwind where he’s so quick.”
Pudla suffered similarly mixed fortunes in the day’s four Twin Tip races, though he did manage to score a bullet before going down to Doque De los Santos (PHI) and Louie “Bong” Fernando (PHI).
The dominance of Kathrin Borgwardt (GER) in the Twin Tip class also suffered a hick-up when she scored one bullet but was overhauled by Cosima Sommer (GER) on the line at the end of the two laps of the track.
Astrid Berz (SUI) had no such problems. She scored bullets in both the women’s Formula kite races of the day to cement her position on top of the leader board, though Borgwardt also kept up the pressure with two second place finishes.
