New Zealand leads world in kitesurfing It was almost three years ago that the tiny village of Mangawhai played host to the first international-standard kitesurfing competition in Australasia – the Red Bull Airlords. This November, organisers are expecting to host more top competitors from New Zealand and overseas in a contest that attracts global attention. The Red Bull Airlords has put beautiful Mangwhai Heads, 1hr 20 mins’ drive north of Auckland, on the map with growing fans of the exhilarating sport. This year the clear waters of Mangawhai will come alive with colourful kites from November 26 to December 1, 2002. Joining the event will be New Zealand’s own World Champion – Nelson-born Cindy Mosey – who’s looking forward to her third year at Mangawhai after claiming the world championship title in a year of travel and competition in 2002. Each year the conditions have proved variable but always allowed two days of amazing action out of the week-long waiting period. The optimum weather is a steady cross-shore wind blowing at least 25 knots and a fine sunny day for photographers and spectators. However these competitors are among the most experienced and best in the world and their abilities shine in just about any conditions. Last year’s line-up of 34 athletes featured kitesurfers from Australia, Hawaii, the U.S. and Europe, all of whom were happy to escape the onset of winter at home for a well-organised week of exciting competitive action in a magical coastal setting. The Airlords has NZ$25,000 in prizemoney. It will feature two main disciplines – a Freestyle competition in which athletes are judged for their execution of tricks and style on the water, and a Hang Time contest which is all about achieving big air. The Hang Time is judged on the amount of time competitors remain airborne. If conditions allow, a Best Trick contest will also be held.
