KPWT World Tour Final Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
The stage is set and everyone is ready for the final contest in the 2002 World Cup Tour. We wait now for the wind. Monday the riders gathered from all over the globe: France, Dominican Republic, Britain, Spain, the United States, Belgium, Israel, and Antigua to meet with the best Brazilian riders in one of the most famous party cities of the world.
Rio is a huge city spread over many small mountain and beach regions. The chosen event site is on a beach called Baiha da Tijuca. This place is truly a paradise, great people, food, nice waves…The Blue Orange organizers have done a great job, this is one of the best-organized events I have been to this year. All the international riders are enjoying being here and having a lot of fun spending time together and catching up on all the adventures of the last months.
The world champions for 2002 have already been decided; Mark Shinn and Fabienne D’Ortoli can rest easy here knowing they will wear the KPWT crown for the next year. But the competition will still be heated, with the most talented riders of the world showing their best maneuvers.
As per the universal rule, the day after a big party the wind finally came up! The night before we danced and played at “The†nightclub of Rio, filled with gorgeous women and a great atmosphere. After some dancing and typical Laurel behavior I went home, alone, for a night of resting before the big day. That plan didn’t really work, it was a replay of what happened in Austria – I woke up sick (throwing up) and not wanting to get out of bed.
So that is one of the tougher things about being a pro kiter, sometimes you just don’t want to go and you have to. Before my heat I was throwing up in the water while kiting that was pretty interesting…For the first two minutes of my heat I was ruling it and then in a transitional lull I dropped the sail into the water which is where it stayed for the next 6 minutes. When I finally reached the kite and felt the soft leading edge I knew why, for everyone out there please make sure you have good inflation in your LE! It will be a long hard climb during the double elimination tomorrow.
The guys were making the best of the light conditions, Mark Shinn had some great little wave rides, JoJo from the DR was riding really strong, and the local Brazilian riders Puga, Hemp, and Miller. We didn’t make it through the second round of the guys, the heats were cancelled due to lack of wind. Tomorrow is a new day, I think all the riders will be resting a lot and hoping for better conditions in which to finish the single. So everybody pray for wind and ALOHA Laurel Eastman
