KPWT Brazil 2002 Tour Final
The final event of the season was sadly quite an anti-climactical end to a very exciting competition season due to the lack of wind. Only the first round of the single elimination ladder was completed – not from lack of trying that is for sure. The organizers even moved the event on Saturday from the beach in Rio to a lagoon a couple of hours to the North in hopes of better wind only to be disappointed by the calm breeze.
Having a competition without wind was quite a struggle for everyone. The riders were all going a bit stir crazy and getting the grumpy no kiting feeling that we all know about. The media scrambled for images and stories amongst a very non-action week. So, what to talk about then?
Well, the bus ride home from the lagoon was pretty interesting with the typical water and food fight ensuing a long, hot, salty, and frustrating day. Nothing like a bus full of crazy French boys to stir things up! That evening we ventured out to a very trendy but quite bad nightclub in Rio to dance and see the famous nightlife. I think we just didn’t know where to go, but I am still favoring Ono’s bar in Cabarete!
Sunday morning was looking pretty promising with the most wind we had seen in days, but after the first heat of the day the red cancellation flag went up. Another day of waiting around, at least on the weekend the beach in Rio is packed full with people and there was plenty of interesting scenery to look at. But the sun was shinning and the Radical team including Sebastian Cattelan, Eduard ? and myself made the best of the light with a very comical photo shoot with our boards on the beach. A bit of towing behind the jet ski was the only action of the day.
The prize giving was pretty emotional for everyone. For sure there was some controversy over the empty 2nd spot on the podium, as Petra Goeshel did not make it over from South Africa for the event. In regards to the 3rd place of the men there was some confusion and somehow 4th place athlete Arnau Maurcia who has followed the entire tour was on the podium instead of 3rd place Julien Sudrat. So, the photos of the podium may be a bit confusing but overall the ceremony was fantastic and it was great to see Mark Shinn, who has proved himself over and over again this year to be the strongest, most versatile and consistent rider on the tour, crowned World Champion for 2002.
That night the crew gathered at a very fun club called “Nuth†– make sure to check it out when in Rio – for dancing, drinking and the usual fun that we seem to make wherever we go. A long night and a short sleep later we were on our way to Cabo Frio where the wind is blowing and the cameras are rolling. With about 20 international riders including Herve Boure (France), Luciano Gonzales (Dominican), Tuva Jensen (Norway) and a very relaxed atmosphere it seems to be just what the doctor ordered after a demanding and exciting season of competition.
As the season is now officially over I would like to say a formal thank you to everyone who was involved with the competition this year. To the riders for pushing each other on the water, supporting each other on the beach, and for all the fun and antics we have had during some of the best parties of my life. To Fred from the KPWT and Mauricio from the PKRA and everyone involved in these two organizations for the hard work and dedication they have to promoting our sport, lets think about getting united for one world tour next year! A really big thank you to the event organizers and especially to the sponsors for making it all happen, to all the media that covered our stories and helped bring our passion for this sport to the eyes of the public.
On a personal level I would like to say a huge thank you to the riders that really helped me on my first year of the tour: Julie Prochaska-Gilbert, Jeff Tobias, Jaime Herraiz, Will James, Rebecca Wolthers, Cindy Mosey, Fiona Wedenig, Abel Lago, Jose Luengo, Marcello Cunha, Julian Kidd, David Tyburski, Sebastian Cattelan, Julien Sudrat, Mark Shinn, and so many more – thanks for everything - I love you guys!
Thanks to everyone who housed and fed me on the tour this year: Rod Parmenter for the truck and house in the Gorge, Pietro Porcello for his hospitality in Sardinia at the Calgari Kite Worlds, Rene Egli for organizing such a great event in Fuerteventura, Daniel at Julier Palace in Silvaplana and Fanjazztic in Zofingen Switzerland, Red Bull Brazil and THANK YOU to Maui Surfer Girls for the support and love in Hawaii.
A very special thank you goes out to my manager Nadine Fischer for her hard work and encouragement, to my sponsors in 2002: Da Kine Hawaii, Chicks Who Rip, XCEL Wetsuits for the gear and for believing in me from the beginning, to my family who has supported my dreams and made it possible for me to live them and to God for this wonderful life.
Its been a great year for me and it will be great to be on the tour again next year! I will sending some reports over the winter about the trips and training we are doing. I wish for everyone a great holiday season of wind and waves, kite hard and enjoy!
