Day 4

It has been a long day of action here in Tenerife, with the wind quickly picking up to 25-30 knots for the fourth day of Kite Master’s action. Head Judge Sami Gali was impressed by the amount of high jumps, which resulted from the conditions, “Height and power are the most important factors in this competition and we saw some great displays of both today”.

As the PKRA riders were training in the bay of El Medano, we started with the Spanish championship where Alvaro Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) proved his supremacy. Being the only international rider in the competition he easily won this single elimination. Alvaro however was very impressed by Patrick Blanc (ESP, Ozone), at only 15 years of age he promises to be part of the new generation of riders. He came third in the singles after the local Ricardo Rodriguez (ESP, RRD).

As the main PKRA competition started, we took some time out to talk to Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot) about his outstanding performance yesterday, when he landed a 900 during one of his heats. Youri commented that he actually landed this move on his first try earlier in the week when he realized that he had enough height to pull it off whilst performing his flat 7’s. He feels confident that it is possible to land a 1080 in these conditions, “if you can find a kicker which allows you to pop high enough, I think you definitely can fit in the 3 rotations.” Youri is currently in the running to become the first kitesurfer to pull off a 1080.

The 1080 descend directly from wakeboarding where Danny Harf was the first person to land the rotation in front of legendary rider Parks Bonifay. He got the move on tape and later a few other riders such as Harley Clifford and Aaron Rathy followed suit and perfected the trick. We expect to see a similar knock on effect in our sport; once the move is publically achieved by one rider, others will no doubt follow close behind.

Youri explained that as hard as the trick is in both sports, the boat in wakeboarding provides perfect flat water and a great kicker to try the trick as many times as you like. In Kitesurfing however, the rider has to play with the ocean and the wind in order to create the perfect moment to pull it off.

With strong winds today, the Kite Masters showed an overview of how kiteboarding has developed in the past 10 years. We saw all the different aspects the sport has to offer: high jumps, technical maneuvers, high handle passes, wakestyle tricks and board offs. If the wind gets stronger we could even see some Mega loops; a high jump where the rider loops his kite at the highest point of elevation, often taking him higher than it!

flo

Sebastien Garat (FRA, RRD) is suffering from shoulder pain at the moment and unluckily suffered the worst crash of the day. During his heat against Corniel (DOM, Ozone) the bar slipped through his fingers while attempting a powered front mobe.

Tom Hebert (FRA, North) won again today which means he remains the best rider of the event so far. This time his victory was against Kevin Langeree (NED, Naish), he landed three nice maneuvers: a king dead man, a powered crow mobe and a mobe 7. He reckons that he has never landed such a powered Mobe 7 in strong winds. Meanwhile Kevin unfortunately failed to execute the same trick, however was happy to see that he can still put in a good overall performance and land other powered moves. Still in recovery from his knee injury, this was a good start and a fun competition for Kevin.

We finished the round robin: Onieva (ESP, Slingshot), Corniel (DOM, Ozone) and Zoon (NED, Slingshot) remain tight with 10 points in Group 1, they will have to compete against each other tomorrow for the two spaces in the final.

In Group 2, Tom Hebert (FRA, North) leads with 12 points, Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha) and Langeree (NED, Naish) are tight for the second place with 9 points each, they will also be competing against each other in order to advance into the last round.

Tomorrow will be the most exciting day of the event with all the final heats and the best competitors of the week. We will also finish the double eliminations of the Spanish championships.

The PKRA would like to thank the sponsors: Ayuntamiento Granadilla de Abona, Cerveza Reina, Ron Santa Cruz, Sheraton La Caleta, Hotel Arenas del Mar, Hotel Carel and Coca-Cola.

DAY 3

Today another 16 heats of the Tenerife Kite Masters 2011 were disputed here in El Medano. According to Race Director Olaf Van Tol the riders are now getting used to the conditions, “This afternoon we began to see some higher board offs as the riders used the nice kickers which line the spot.”

tom albie

For the first time in the competition a full 10 point score was awarded by the judges. First for Tom Hebert (FRA, North); he landed a “king dead man” after a gust took him by surprise during the middle of his trick. He was lifted up further in the air for a few more seconds than expected, but managed to hold the board off with his body upside down.

The second ten points were given to Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot) for performing a perfect flat 9 once again, but this time during his heat against Hamaini (MOR, North). You can view the clip of the 900 on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5DilC1-wM4

Today saw the first of the girl’s heats, the two wave-riders Kari Schibevaag (NOR, Ozone) and Angela Peral (ESP, North) went back to their roots to perform a few freestyle tricks for the public. Kari is the current leader of the 2011 Wave championship and came here to Tenerife to train in the waves of El Cabezo which is on the other side of the bay. Today she managed to land a railey to blind as well as a couple of impressive high jumps. Meanwhile Angela Peral had fun competing against her friend Cristina Resinas, both girls came from Tarifa to enjoy the waves of Tenerife. This was Cristina’s first time on the PKRA and she is loving the atmosphere of this event, she remarks that she never imagined it would be such an entertaining experience. Angela and Kari seem to be the two best girls so far and will most likely be meeting in the finals.

albie ws

Ariel Corniel (DOM, Ozone) went for some high handle passes and managed to beat Alvaro Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) in his heat. Alvaro explains the reasons for his loss very simply, “the gusts just didn’t blow in my favor and therefore I couldn’t perform the high jumps I was expecting to pull off.”

A couple of newcomers came to this event; the two Venezuelan riders Oscar Hurtado (VEN, Slingshot) and Sergio Coello (VEN, Liquid Force) were boasting some very powerful maneuvers. Oscar rode very well in Fuerteventura last week and proved to be a serious contender for the next few events. His style is very radical; he lands perfect front blind mobes and low mobes which are reminiscent of the old riders of the tour. We are looking forward to seeing these moves at future events and will be keeping a keen eye on their progression.

After 3 days of competition Hebert (FRA, North) remains the only undefeated rider so far, he even succeeded against Alberto Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha), who is ranked 3rd on the PKRA and who was a serious contender for first place in this group . Tom is now almost secured a place in the finals whilst Zoon, Onieva and Corniel seem to be the best contenders from the other group.

seb girls

We met with Alberto Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha) after the last heat of the day, he’s enjoying this competition as the spot is perfect to get some speed between the waves which allows you to go big and get some serious height. He reckons that the “Frenchies” are doing very well, and lost his heat today due to some nice board offs shown by French competitor Hebert.

Tomorrow will be the end of the competition and things begin to get a lot more serious for everyone. The riders are beginning to count up their points in order to gain a precious place in the finals. The wind conditions will remain the same so we’re expecting another perfect day of action.

The PKRA would like to thank the sponsors: Ayuntamiento Granadilla de Abona, Cerveza Reina, Ron Santa Cruz, Sheraton La Caleta, Hotel Arenas del Mar, Hotel Carel and Coca-Cola.

1st Competion Day

The spectators on the beach of El Medano came in large numbers today for the Kite Masters in Tenerife. The wind picked up around midday and kept increasing until it reached a solid 25 knots. The PKRA riders brought an amazing show for the crowd on the beach. The new format of competition for the Kite Masters combined high jumps and technical maneuvers which showed all aspects of freestye kitesurfing. For those of you who did not have the chance to come to Tenerife you can follow it live on: http://www.livestream.com/prokitetour

The stronger the wind got, the higher the kitesurfers jumped. The high jumps allowed the riders to perform great boards off. They also executed handle passes which are considered as the most technical tricks, and are also referred to as wakeboard tricks.

oscar

Race Director Olaf Van Tol started the competition at 12pm and was excited about the new Kite Masters format. The action was a lot easier for the public to understand with very high jumps and board off tricks. The usual standard of the PKRA competition are technical progressive maneuvers, which are often only fully appreciated by experienced kiters. Olaf also added that everyone could fully enjoy somebody flying ten meters in the air while flipping a board around for five seconds and traveling up to fifty meters.

However, the current leader of the PKRA World Tour, Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot) landed one of the hardest progressive move today: a flat 9, which consist in a double horizontal rotation, passing the bar twice behind his back and landing toe side. This move stirred a buzz this winter as 5 times world champion (2004 to 2008) Aaron Hadlow (GBR, Flexifoil) made a point to land the move in Cape Town and did a web series about it. He’s not alone anymore as Youri landed a couple of flat 7’s during his heats and two flat 9’s after his heats.

youri

Judge Antoine Jaubert explained the point system of the Kite Masters: during the Round Robin, every competitor will go against each other, out of 14 men, they get 0 point if they loose, 1 point if they are equal, and 2 points if they win the heat. Divided in two groups of 7 riders, the two best ones of each group will come out of the round robin and fight for the podium places.

One of the most exciting heats of the day was Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) against Zoon (NED, Slingshot), both are very good in old school jumps. They have been on tour for years and have experienced the progression of kiteboarding. They are also masters in wake-style tricks with power and radicalism. Youri crashed a flat 7 at the end of his heat while trying to secure his win. Instead he couldn’t launch his kite and ended on the rocks downwind of the spot. Meanwhile Alvaro was using a big kite (9 meters), at the beginning of his heat in order to perform high jumps and then changed for a smaller size (7 meters) to get more technical. This was a good strategy as he won this heat and many others.

albie

Sebastien Garat (FRA, RRD) really appreciated the round robin format because he likes the fact that you are competing for at least 7 heats, so 42 minute. In normal competition, a loss means you are eliminated but in this format you have many chances to perform your best.

Half way through the competition the tide was lower, which made the spot flatter, easier for the riders to land their tricks. Some amazing board off moves happened today, to be remembered are the king dead man by Tom Hebert (FRA, North) which is a board off with the body upside down. Tom didn’t stop his mastering in old school maneuvers and went on to do a board off pass, passing his board behind his back while in the air. His good friend Sebastien Garat (FRA, RRD) therefore decided to execute his favorite board off: flipping his board in his hands and back on his feet.

And last but not least, Alvaro Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) performed board off tricks that made his reputation back in the days, for example: the multiple board off, the “tic-tac”: a 360 of the board spinning in the air and then back on his feet.

If you have a hard time figuring these tricks out, watch the competition live tomorrow on the PKRA live stream page at 2pm, local time.

The two best competitors today after 22 heats disputed, half way through the round robin, are Alvaro Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) and Tom Hebert (FRA, North), both riders getting two points after each heat. Tom will have to go against two very strong competitors tomorrow: Alberto Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha) and Kevin Langeree (NED, Naish) 2009 World Champion, who came back from a knee injury and is competing again for the first time this year here at the Kite Masters. Race Director Olaf Van Tol noted that Kevin was riding as if nothing ever happened, landing a nice mobe 7 on a kicker as well as the highest jump of the day.

Training Day:

The first day of the Kite Masters in Tenerife started late as the wind took some time to pick up. Extreme Elements used this relaxed morning to shoot some lifestyle shots up on the highest mountain in Spain, El Teide (3718m). They managed to take some beautiful shots of the north side of the island by paragliding back down from the peak.

The wind finally increased to a steady 15 knots allowing the organizers to start the racing part of the Spanish Championships. A fleet of riders went out in the ocean to battle it out on a four buoy rectangular course. Richy Rodriguez took the lead over Borja Jochen after three disputed races today.

Meanwhile the PKRA riders went out for a training session and the Media had the chance to shoot photo sequences and slow motion tricks in the water.

alva

Alberto Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha) rode for a few hours and was happy to be on a 13 meters kite instead of the 6 meters he and his fellow competitors were riding all of last week in Fuerteventura. This allowed him to try some flat 3’s and 5’s off the little kickers, which built up in the afternoon.

As riders were training, a few tricks discussions started on the beach today. Alexander Lewis Hughes (PKRA judge) suggested a new move known as "the G-spot"… a rather confusing name for most of the riders, but it turned out to be a “toe side front flip to blind”. The riders had a hard time figuring it out but gave it a good go for the local Spanish TV crew who came later during the day to film a short report.

oscar

Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot) landed a perfect flat 7 right in front of official PKRA photographer Toby Bromwich, who happily caught the sequence for the magazines. Youri had an interesting lunch today as he met with the commentator of the event who is also a magician; he performed a few tricks for Youri and left him baffled by the magic.

Alvaro Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) who is here to partake in both the Kite Masters and the Spanish championship was happy to train on a bigger kite but says he is looking forward to stronger winds so that he can show more power tricks to the public. He also added that “some very big names are here, especially the Dutchies [(Langeree (Naish), Zoon (Slingshot)], so it should be an interesting competition. Also I landed a flat 7 too but nobody saw it…”

The girls came down to the beach this afternoon but didn’t go on the water. Angela Peral (ESP, North) was happy to see everyone out there and chill a bit as she’s here to have fun. She says she will go training in the nice waves of El Cabezo when the conditions are right.

angela

The same goes for Kari Schibevaag (NOR, Ozone), who has suffered from a terrible infection in her leg after a journey to Morocco. The infection spread very quickly but luckily the doctor successfully managed to control it and she is now ready to ride again.

The weather forecast seems to indicate stronger winds for tomorrow, which will increase even more toward the end of the week. We’re expecting good conditions for a nice Freestyle competition and a few more races in the Spanish championship.

The PKRA would like to thank it's sponsors: Ayuntamiento Granadilla de Abona, Cerveza Reina, Ron Santa Cruz, Sheraton La Caleta, Hotel Arenas del Mar, Hotel Carel and Coca-Cola.

Kitesurfers from all over the world arrived at the beautiful beach of El Medano to compete for the Tenerife Kite Masters title here in the Canary Islands. Morocco, Norway, France, Venezuela, Holland, Dominican Republic and Italy, are just a few of the countries being represented in this week of competition.

Race Director Olaf Van Tol (NED) really enjoyed the good vibes on the beach today as the sponsor of the event Reina Cervezas brought some beautiful girls to welcome all the riders for registration.

The big news of this event is the come back of Kevin Langeree (NED, Naish), 2009 World Champion, who broke his ACL last year in Fuerteventura whilst competing in the PKRA event. He was leading the tour at the time and had to stop kiting for 8 months to get through his rehabilitation process. After surgery and months of training at the gym, he slowly made a come back on the water and he is now more motivated than ever to get back on tour, “I’m coming here completely unstressed, just to see where I stand on the tour and compete with my friends. I haven’t set any goals yet, this year is a slow process to ease me back into the tour and I will then focus on next year to fight for the title”.

Current PKRA tour leader Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot), is happy to see Kevin back and can understand the trouble his friend is going through, “I had the same injury on my ACL and it took me a full year to be 100 per cent back on top form. Not only physically but psychologically, it’s hard on the mind to know that your body is a little bit more fragile than it used to be. Kevin is very strong mentally so I’m sure that he will be back to his best soon. The next PKRA tour stop in Germany will be his big come back. We’re here to have as much fun as possible, no stress, this is going to be a great competition showing a little bit of all the different styles of kiteboarding: high jumps and new school tricks.”

Head Judge Sami Gali (ESP) explained in more details what the Kite Masters judges will be looking for during this event. “This event has a special format, we’ll be taking the four best jumps into consideration and one of them has to be an old school trick, that means a board off for the men and a one foot for the girls. Depending on the conditions we’ll decide what gives the most points, height or technicality of the trick. If the wind is strong we’ll expect height if it’s lighter, the riders will have to be more technical and concentrate on the execution.”

The heats will be 7 min long and all the riders will have to face each other at least once during the event, this system is called “round robin”. In the end only 4 men and 2 women will be qualified for the final heats from which we will decide the winner of the event.

Some of the best riders in the world have come to Tenerife for this event, apart from Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot) and Kevin Langeree (NED, Naish) mentioned above, we’re happy to have Alberto Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha) from Italy, 3rd Overall on the PKRA who remembered last year’s conditions here as being epic with nice kickers and strong winds. The French team composed of Garat (FRA, RRD), Hebert (FRA, North) and Daubos (FRA, Naish) are just as motivated out of the water as they are in it. Ariel Corniel (DOM, Ozone) is expected to be very good in these conditions as well as Alvaro Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) one of the most famous Spanish riders who has been competing on the tour for years and has seen kiting evolve from the old school high jumps to the new technical maneuvers.

All riders are excited to partake in the Kite Masters, since it doesn’t count for the overall ranking of the PKRA season it will be less stressful for them. This means that it will be all about having fun and showing all the different aspects of kiteboarding to the public. We will be seeing the very best the sport can offer this week, everything from high jumps to wakestyle tricks which are lower but with very technical execution.

The event will start tomorrow at 10am local time, the weather forecast is predicting that winds will increase throughout the week which should bring some exciting action for the public of El Medano.

This will be a nice, relaxed competition and the PKRA would like to thank the sponsors of this event for all their support: Ayuntamiento Granadilla de Abona, Cerveza Reina, Ron Santa Cruz, Sheraton La Caleta, Hotel Arenas del Mar, Hotel Carel and Coca-Cola.

Finals of the 2011 Tenerife Kite Masters

Aug-13-2011
This was a beautiful week of wind and sunshine in El Medano, Tenerife. We’ve had five days of action in which to pick the best four male and best two female riders who got into the finals today. The competition started with 25 knots side shore winds and nice waves rolling into the bay.

The Spanish championship saw the amazing come back of local rider Alexandre Bournay (FRA, Naish) who went from last place (he lost his first heat in the singles) to the finals. Alexandre had to fight through a lot of heats to come back and even had to face the leader of the Spanish tour, Alvaro Onieva (ESP, Slingshot). Alvaro secured his heat with a couple of powered moves while Alex had his kite higher and didn’t land all his tricks. Onieva has now won the Spanish title for the year.

Meanwhile Race Director Olaf Van Tol decided to run the Kite Masters heats which would allow four men to advance into the finals.

Tom Hebert (FRA, North) was the only rider qualified for the final, five other riders were tight and had to fight for their places. Zoon (NED, Slingshot), Corniel (DOM, Ozone) and Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) in group 1, Langeree (NED, Naish) and Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha) in group 2.

The competition started with Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) against Corniel (DOM, Ozone), both going high and landing a wide variety of tricks. However Alvaro crashed a lot of tricks and Corniel secured his heat with very high jumps and a few nice board offs which gave him the win.

Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot), current leader of the PKRA, was up next. Youri has been winning every single competition this year and went big in both his heats against Onieva and Corniel. He easily won the four points to get into the finals with Corniel.

In the second group Alberto Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha) had to verse the PKRA 2009 World Champion, Kevin Langeree (NED, Naish) who went right away into high jumps. He managed to get away from the old school maneuvers and concentrated mainly on the wakestyle tricks. Rondina executed a perfect crowmobe, low mobe and a flat 5 while Kevin went for a mobe 5, 313 and Blind Judges but with less power than Alberto.

Advancing into the finals are Hebert, Rondina, Corniel and Zoon. The wind got stronger but the riders remained on their 9 and 10 meter kites despite the 25 to 30 knots. This proved to be a cause of difficulty when they attempted to unhook and go for powered tricks. The good news for the public though was that it allowed them to put on a great show; jumping high and gaining hang time.

Langeree (NED, Naish) and Onieva (ESP, Slingshot) went out first to fight for the 5th and 6th position. Alvaro landed all his usual mobes even in these strong winds. He also did multiple board offs and a “tic tac”. Meanwhile Kevin was able to land a few technical tricks; he tried a double front mobe and made the second pass but crashed on the landing. The same thing later happened on a mobe 7 which caused him to loose again and end in sixth place.

Tom Hebert (FRA, North) was now starting from scratch in these finals and went against Ariel Corniel (DOM, Ozone). The heat was very tight as both riders went for a wide variety of tricks. Tom crashed a lot of his moves but ended up landing a perfect NIS and a handle board off pass that outshone Ariel’s simple board off and wakestyle moves.

The semis kept going with Alberto Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha) against Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot). Alberto reckoned that, “I didn’t have a good heat as the wind was a little more gusty than usual and I couldn’t perform my wakestyle tricks as well as I’m used to”. Meanwhile Zoon kept landing trick after trick and advanced into the finals against Tom Hebert.

First the loser’s final for the third place welcomed Corniel (DOM, Ozone) against Rondina (ITA, Cabrinha). You could tell that both riders had learnt from their past heats and were now going for a complete variety of tricks with high jumps and powered moves. The gusty conditions played on Alberto’s mind meaning he crashed a few of his moves. Ariel however landed his powered tricks early enough to then concentrate on flying in the bay of El Medano, he showed a nice long one foot and multiple board offs to win the heat.

In the girls division Angela Peral (ESP, North) and Kari Schibevaag (NOR, Ozone) met in the finals. Both girls were overpowered and concentrated on high jumps first, to test out the conditions. Kari then decided to display her new school moves while Angela had a hard time unhooking in these winds. Kari Schibevaag takes the win of this Kite Masters and the two girls are now going to concentrate on their wave riding training.

The final heat of the day was a spectacular show as both riders jumped higher than ever! Tom Herbert (FRA, North) was out on a ten meter and Youri Zoon (NED, Slingshot) on a nine. They both reckoned that they wanted to be overpowered in order to get height but had a hard time unhooking as the wind was now very strong and gusty. Judge Antoine Jaubert explained that Hebert won the old school part while Youri won the wakestyle side of the points. Overall however Youri claimed the victory, something he must be getting used to as this is his sixth event title this year!

Tom was happy with his second place; he lead most of this event with his incredible board offs and looks forward to the next competition.
