press release:
Day 2
"Day two of the Red Bull King of the Air main event began Friday with major upsets seen in both the men's and women's division. Both Mark Shinn of the United Kingdom and Marcus "Flash" Austin of Maui, 2002 Red Bull King of the Air top two finishers respectively, were knocked out of the competition with two loses each. Rumor has it that "Flash" is saving his energy for the Hang-Time portion of the event which will start tomorrow.
In the women's "no-loss" bracket final, Susanne Mai of the Domican Republic beat out 2002 Red Bull King of the Air women's winner, Sheldon Plentovich of Oahu, in an extremely close heat. Plentovich, who has now lost once automatically, has moved into the "one-loss" final to take place tomorrow.
The day began with cranking winds gusting at 30+ knots. By the afternoon, the wind turned easterly and died down to intermittent 20+ knot gusts with 10 knot lulls in between. Correct equipment selection was critical today as picking the right kite for the heat could determine if a competitor won or loss his or her heat. The surf stayed in the 3-4 foot range but was more consistent by the end of the day."
Same conditions for all…
"Alex Zavadsky of Seattle, Washington by way of Russia, narrowly missed advancement in a heat that had to be postponed three times because of wind lulls, said of today's equipment choices,†The kite you pick is both right and wrong. Maybe it will be right for the outside where there are stronger winds, but wrong for the inside where the wind is less. Everyone had to deal with the same conditions and those who advanced had a little more luck on their side than I did." Zavadsky rode a 9 meter kite in his last heat.
Amid the inconsistent conditions the assembled crowd and judges did see stellar performances by Adam Koch, Bertrand Fleury, Alex Zavadsky and Julie Gilbert all of whom pushed the sport kiteboarding into new levels with today's feats.
Saturday will see the completion of the 2003 Red Bull King of the Air Freestyle event as well as the Hang-Time portion. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. (conditions permitting)."
