Ik weet dat er al veel info te vinden is, maar vraag het toch nog even hier: 10 dagen Cabo Verde tussen kerst en nieuw met een niet-kitende vriendin: welke eilanden zijn mooi voor andere dingen (natuur, cultuur, avontuur - Sal wordt zoiezo bezocht voor een aantal knalsessies) en hebben toch nog wat wind? Ik land in Praia maar daarna ligt alles open!

Ook: welke kites neem ik mee? Heb een 9, een 12, en mijn Blade Fatlady 17m (weeg 75 kg). En wetsuit ook mee of niet?

Transport tussen de verschillende eilanden: er schijnen ferries te zijn die cheaper zijn dan de vluchten - iemand hier meer info over?

Sal en Boa Vista zijn de kite eilanden maar ook de grootste zandbakken, shorty is in principe goed te doen.

The islands offering good kitesurf spots are:

- Sal

- Boa Vista

- Sao Vicente 

- Maio

For Praia (island of Santiago) if you are desperate, you can kitesurf close the harbour in Praia. We know kitesurfers who live there but conditions are not good (they visit us in Sao Vicente to go kitesurfing).

And for other things to do, it just depends on what you like.:

- For a beach holiday with a well-developed tourist infrastructure: Sal and Boa Vista.

- For a holiday with more variety (including Cape Verdian culture, scenic landscape) and authenticity (very little tourism): Sao Vicente (even better if you make time for a trip to Santo Antao as well).

- For a beach holiday to get away from the crowds: Maio.

Just a practical tip during X-mas - New Year, local flights tend to get overbooked. I'm not sure how easy it is during that time to hop from one island to the other if you do not have tickets yet.

Forgot to mention:

No need for 17m unless you plan to be in Praia / Maio only (they have less wind compared to the others).

I weigh 90 - 95kg and mostly use 10m in Sao Vicente.

Sao Vincente looks like a good compromise between culture, adventure, and kiting! Any info on the good kite-beaches? And what conditions are there? Waves, flat water, rocks, sand, wind-direction, ...? 

And what about Fogo and the volcano? Is that worth the boattrip from Praia?

 shorty is in principe goed te doen.

Het kan wel maar persoonlijk vond ik het erg frisjes om me te varen. 

Vooral als je er de hele dag ben en je rust uit dan vond ik het op de lange duur toch wel koud worden met een shorty.  De volgende keer als ik er heen zou gaan zou ik geen shorty meer mee nemen maar een wet suite.

Beter te warm dan te koudt !!!  

Ik heb nog wel een filmpje over Sal van onze kite vakantie dit jaar met de badt gaste on tourr,  hoe het daar is en wat de mogelijkheden zijn,  als je daar interesse in heb natuurlijk ??    

For the wetsuit: most folks wear a shorty during the windy season (mid-Oct to end June).

For those that get cold easily: Feb - April are slilghtly cooler so wetsuit is a good idea.

I've never been in Fogo, but all of our guests who have been there liked it.

For kitesurf spots in Sao Vicente:

- As is the case with all islands: waves, waves, waves (don't expect any flat water spots - there are no lagoons to speak of and there are no reefs far out on the ocean creating big flat water areas)

- Salamansa is by far the best spot (location of our kitesurf center) which has : cross to cross on-shore wind at the beach (sand, no rocks) with a beach break, cross-offshore wind at two reef breaks one with bigger waves, the other with smaller waves (with wind blowing direction of the beach - Salamansa is a big bay)

- There is another spot we visit when the wind is dissapointing (blows 4-5 knots more due to venturi effect). But.... can only be reached with a boat.

@Mvandijk: Ok, we'll make a little stop to Fogo to go check it out and then I will let you know if it was worth it . 

And glad to hear you have a kitesurf center on Salamansa. Do you guys rent out gear? And do you by any chance have a website? Also, any accommodation that is walking distance to the kitespot that you recommend?

And you mentioned Sao Nicolao and Santo Antao - how easy are these islands to reach? could it be done as a day trip? E.g. leave by boat early in the morning, see some cultural stuff in the morning, kite in the afternoon, come back in the evening?

We have: food, drinks, lounge area, rescue service, an instructor and kitesurf host speaking englis dutch and french, a kitesurf safety manager and very important...

a limit on number of kiters allowed on the water (18 ) to keep the spot special (no worries, that number has never been reached!)

For accommodation: nearly all clients stay in Mindelo. We have a shuttle bus that can pick you up to take you to the spot (20 - 30 min drive).

Sorry no accommodation for now. We are currently putting up 2 tents with washing & toilet facilities (one luxury, one standard) with super comfortbable beds - ready February 2015.

For Santo Antao: a lot of folks plan to go for 1 day and end up staying longer....

Yes, you can do Santo Antao as a day trip, taking the ferry early morning and returning later afternoon (crossing take 50 - 60 min).

Sao Nicolao is better if you have more time - takes longer to get there - a little less spectacular for landscape.

News from yeaterday: The volcano on Fogo had an eruption yesterday (after some small tremors) 

Depending on the risk you are willing to take: pershaps something to take in consideration. 

Hoi Strekke. Wij zijn vorig jaar november twee weken naar Sao Vicente geweest. Was een heerlijke vakantie!

De kitespot (Salamansa) is bijzonder, met name door de kleinschaligheid. Erg leuke sfeer, relatief goedkoop, ontspannen, leuk zeer toegankelijk Nederlands/Pools stel die genieten en ondanks weinig voorzieningen er iets van weten te maken. Maar stel je wel een neergeplempte keet op een strand vrij ver van de stad voor (is in mijn herinnering ca half uurtje rijden), met destijds nog geen sanitaire voorzieningen. Geen luxe bar of erg veel te doen als je niet kite, maar doordat je er met een kleine groep bent maken de mensen het gezellig en de tosti's en rijst/vis lunch zijn heerlijk. Wij hadden wat pech met de wind, die was meestal net iets te zacht voor mijn 10,5m, zou zeker je 12m meenemen. Als het wat harder waaide waren de golven ENORM. Mijn man vond dat super, maar ik vond ze eng. Moet ik er wel bijzeggen dat ik toen pas net 2 maanden begonnen was met kitesurfen en ik al bodydraggend door de branding probeerde te komen alvorens mijn waterstart te maken, niet altijd met succes.

Op Sao Vicente hebben wij verder onder meer een dagje gemountainbiked (e-bike), surfles genomen, gesnorkeld bij een wrak, de stad bekeken, gegeten etc. Ik zou er niet al te veel dagen voor uittrekken. En als je halve dagen zou willen kitesurfen dan is het handig om een auto te huren, zodat je niet van de pendel (of schoolbus) afhankelijk bent. Santo Antao is wel zeker de moeite waard, prachtig groen eiland en makkelijk bereikbaar met de boot/ferrie vanaf Sao Vicente / Mindelo. Je kunt hier heel mooi wandelen en een taxi-tourtje doen om wat bezienswaardigheden af te gaan (wij zijn er een paar dagen geweest). 

Verder zijn de ferries tussen de eilanden NIET te doen, naar wat ik gehoord heb (lang en misselijkmakend), zeker niet als je maar 10 dagen totaal hebt, dus misschien is het realistischer om een keus te maken tussen Sal en Sao Vicente.

Onze vlucht maakte op de terugweg nog even een korte tussenlanding op Sal. Dit zag er uit als een platte dorre woestijn, maar geloof graag dat het om te kiten heerlijk kan zijn daar.

@MVANDIJK: Looks like we'll be going to Santo Antao for a few days (hiking), and then coming to Sao Vincente from Dec 31st - Jan 2nd. Is there any place to kitesurf on Santo Antao? Just a little sandy beach on the North / East side of the island anywhere? I just need a little area to launch!

@STREKKE. First honest answer: Santo Antao is not for kitesurfing.

Only if you are truly a world class kitesurfer (and know how to deal with rocky beaches and know how to launch from rocks): there are amazing waves at Ponta del Sol. We were there with Kari Schibevaag & Marc Ramseier , they were super exited seeing the waves but we did not have the gear with us.

The other spot is very small beach just East of Porto Novo. Here, you'll need the wind coming from ENE to make it work (wind is more often NE, sometimes NNE so you would need to be super lucky.

Just enjoy the landscape, athenticity, - an amazing island, amazing people.

@MVANDIJK - OK, thanks, won't get my hopes up then for Santo Antao... In any case I will see you on Salamanca beach in a few days! But our first stop tomorrow is Praia - can you give me some more info on the spot near the harbor you speak of (is it Gamboa beach)? And are there any other spots, like on the North side of the island? Thanks!

@ STREKKE - For Praia , it's indeed Gamboa beach. I've never kitesurfed there myself. From what I've heard: wind is generally lighter compared to Sao Vicente, Sal and Boa Vista. The harbor itself the wind is light and fluky. Once you get outside its gets a bit better. I've never heard very positive stories about Santiago (& Praia) for kitesurfing so don't expect to much and .... expect to be the only kitesurfer (so mind your safety - there will not be any rescue service).
