The introduction of the iPhone App Store has indeed been an opportunity for developers to take the iPhone in directions it has never been before. Here’s one I have to admit I didn’t see coming. Someone has created an iPhone application which let’s you measure wind speed. Of course, the most obvious question is, “How do they do that?â€. Is seems developers figured out a way to use the microphone built into an iPhone to take the measurements. Using a specific algorithm the application can take what is heard by the microphone and convert it to wind speed.
The application is available for US$0.99. You have to watch the video of the iPhone application compared to an actual electronic wind meter featured at the top of this article.
The accuracy of the iPhone application is pretty incredible. Not too mention, this is just freaking cool that all the iPhone uses is a microphone to measure wind speed.
