KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009
Kiteboard Pro World Tour
23rd July – 2nd August 2009

Welcome to the second event for Wave Masters and the third stop on the KPWT 2009.
Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit 2009 is a highly anticipated event and one not to be missed if you are a water-sports enthusiast.
Registration took place today at the KPWT office and will continue through to tomorrow. 4o wave riders came down today and look eager and excited to put the conditions to the test.

2008 Women’s Wave Masters champion Kirsty Jones (UK, NORTH) came early to register and looked relaxed and well conditioned to take on what Portugal has to offer!
Abel Lago (SPA, RRD) has come down to Santa Cruz to compete and seems quite confident and relaxed. I saw him out on the water yesterday and he was looking really good and responding super well to the conditions here.

Local organizers from Ocean team are frantically preparing the final touches to the event site for this evenings opening ceremony! It promises to be a huge spectacle with a fireworks display, music performance by GROUNDATION and an after party on the beach!

Tomorrow, the Rip Curl Pro, the National Surf Contest, will start off proceedings at the Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit 2009!
A skippers meeting will be held at 09h00 for the KPWT riders.
The race director from the KPWT, Vita Adamicek will then give further instructions regarding the Wave Masters competition.

Thank you to the sponsors and all concerned for their support and contributions towards such a fantastic event on the 2009 calender.

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 10

Welcome to the final day of the KPWT Santa Cruz Wave Masters 2009!

The wind arrived as promised and the double elimination started again at 13h30! The wind speed was up to 14 knots and the wave swell peaked at 1.5 meters, coming in at 6 waves per set.
The semi finals and finals were 15 minute heats and the judges took scores from their 3 best waves.

Jan Marcos Riveras (DOM REP, STARKITES) was looking strong today and in excellent form. He progressed into the final to face Jesse Richman (HAW, CABRINHA), after strong competition from Abel Lago (SPA, RRD) in the semi.

In the women’s heats, Ainhoa Garcia (SPA, AIRUSH) gave Kari Schibevaag (NOR, OZONE) a very hard time in the semi final, with a good selection of waves and strong riding. But in the end Kari progressed once again into the final to face Kirsty Jones for the Wave Masters title here at Santa Rita beach. Unfortunately the two finals could not be completed as the wind had dropped below KPWT standards and Jan Marcos and Kari will have to settle for second place.

Prize giving was held at the VIP tent, in front of the kayak pool and the many spectators that had come down to see their champions. Overall and much deserved men’s title went to Jesse Richman, who had stayed positive and relaxed throughout the entire competition.

The women’s champion, Kirsty Jones is proving hard to beat this year and looks very well placed after the first two events on the KPWT 2009 Wave Masters tour. Congratulations to all riders who competed and our two champions in Portugal!

A special thanks goes to Bruno Melo, Fernanda Mauricio, Marcelo Martins and all the Ocean Spirit team for our wonderful time here in Santa Cruz. This event has been outstandingly organized and hugely attended and we look forward to next year!

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 9

Today marked another great day for the KPWT Ocean Spirit Wave Masters Grand Slam 2009!
The day did not started with low clouds and rain, but the promise of wind kept the riders and the team at the beach.

The sun broke through in the afternoon and the wind increased up to 16 knots with swells reaching 2 meters.
The race director called a skippers meeting just before17h00 and prepped the riders for the start of the double elimination in 45 minutes.

They ran ten minute heats and took scores from the 2 best waves. On average there were 10 waves per set so more than enough to make a good selection.
The early rounds saw Bruno Melo, the local, use his local knowledge in wave selection performing some good turns on the open faces. Unfortunately losing out to Paulo Silva (POR), in the quarter-finals, who was looking good in his earlier rounds.
Silva went on to face Jan Marcos Riveras (DOM REP, STARKITES) who seems to be rested well and recovered from his knee injury sustained in the single elimination.
For the women, Ania Grzelinska (POL, NORTH) ended the progress of Celine Collaud (SWI, JN) and will face Ainhoa Garcia (SPA, AIRUSH) in the semi-final.

The wind had unfortunately dropped off at 19h30 and the heat was placed on standby until tomorrow, the last day of this exciting Wave Masters competition.

Tonight the main stage will play host to a French reggae band Souls of Fire.

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 8

Last night the Ocean Spirit was definitely alive! Thousands flocked to the beach to enjoy the show at Santa Rita beach.
Reggae band Sebastian Sturm started off proceedings, setting the beat for the evening and warming the crowd up for Buraka Som Sistema. They performed an array of progressive kuduru (African Percussion) tracks and carried the crowd late into the night.

A skippers meeting was held at 11h00 this morning and all riders were asked to standby until the afternoon.
The kayak competition continued today with good support on the beach and excellent waves to work with.
The wind did not however arrive, but forecast looks good for Saturday and Sunday to finish the double elimination.
The first heat being Cameron Dietrich (HAW, CABRINHA) against Rafael Aguado (SPA, NORTH), both looking to climb the overall ranking at the KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009.

The day was called off at 17h00, as the wind was just not going to arrive.

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 7

Welcome to another wonderful day on the KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009!
Patiently we waited for wind and it started to blow a little in the afternoon, but never reached KPWT competition standard. Swell was perfect today with about 1-2 meter faces that the kayak competition took full advantage of this morning.

This evening promises to be a night to remember with over 10 000 expected! The Principal stage will host the highly anticipated local band, Buraka Sound System followed by Sebastian Sturm.

The KPWT would like to thank Bruno Melo and the Ocean Spirit team once more for all their support and putting together a spectacular festival of music and wave sports.

The weekend promises some good conditions. We all look forward to enjoy the show that all riders promise to give us all, given the chance.

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 6

Today was another day for those to take in the festivities that the KPWT Ocean Spirit offers other than wind.
There was beach volleyball, surfing, the kayak competition and a pool in which to learn how to kayak.

The riders had the chance to get free massages, spend some time relaxing in the Jacuzzi or just enjoy the sun and catch up on some sleep.
At 18h00 the sunset stage hosted Emilbus to introduce us into the evening and end the beautiful day on a good note.

The excitement is building for the festivities tomorrow night and the local band, Buraka Sound System that promise to entertain us all, with their Indie Rock sound! Over 10 000 people are expected to come to the event site for the 21h00 start!
After the wonders of day 4 of the competition it seems we will have to wait another day for some good wind and big swells. Forecast looks good tomorrow with wind coming down from the North so let’s hope we get some first-rate swell and another good day of kitesurfing!

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 5

After such a successful day on the KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit yesterday, today was far more subdued.
Yesterday stamped its mark in the history books with a huge Wave Masters event! Strong and constant 20 knot winds and 3 meter swells! Jesse Richman pushed himself and challenged the conditions with everything he had yesterday and really put on a great show.
Kirsty Jones showed most of the male riders why they don’t want to square up against in a heat! Her strong and powerful style proved she handles even the biggest of conditions with great bottom turns and hard cut-backs!

A skippers meeting was held at 11h00, unfortunately the wind from the North didn’t arrive today.
We were stuck between two fronts, the cold usually bringing the wind and the warm not. Today, to the delight of those who wished to work on their tans, got to enjoy the warm front.

Those who had come down to Santa Rita beach were not only able to enjoy the sun, but also some world class kayaking and longboarding.
At 17h30, the Sunset Stage began its usual entertainment, inviting all to sit, relax and enjoy a beer and some local music on the beach.

A final skippers meeting was called at 18h30 and the decision was made to come back tomorrow and hopefully the wind does the same so we can complete the highly anticipated double elimination Wave Masters 2009
Thank you to Bruno Melo and his local organization for putting together such a successful event. This year has proved that Santa Cruz is a TOP spot in Europe for waves and wind!

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 4

Welcome to the KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Grand Slam!
Yes! A day with great conditions! Skipper’s meeting was called at 11am and all the riders looked excited about the chance to have some fun on the water and complete the single elimination!
Wind was good and increasing throughout the day, swell size was great and building all day reaching 3 meters with some big faces to work with!

Competition started in front of the main judge tower, directly in front of the main beach area at 13h45. The spectators on the beach, who came to see the World Champions compete, looked to be enjoying every bit of the competition. The second round heats for men needed to be completed before the women got their chance to show what they are made of.
And boy did they have some work to do throughout the day as the swell got bigger and bigger.

The first semi final between Abel Lago (SPA, RRD) and Will Bennet (UK, CABRINHA), who rode strapless, was a great show, with both riders performing some big turns, both top and bottom and cracking the lip with everything they have!
Abel progressed to the final to face the young superstar Jesse Richman (HAW, CABRINHA) who had an exciting heat against Jan Marcos Riveras (DOM REP, STARKITES) in front of the 15 000 spectators who had now been drawn to the shoreline to witness the spectacle, which was today KITESURFING!

Carlos Delicado: “I think that was one of the best heats I have ever seen in my life!”
Unfortunately for Jan Marcos, he injured his knee during the heat and cannot compete any further today.

In the women’s heats, Kari Schibevaag (NOR, OZONE) faced Kirsty Jones (UK, FLEXIFOIL) who both looked excited to take on the big conditions this afternoon!
Kari: “Wow, it is actually quite scary out there, but what a super competition!”
The final was set and Jesse Richman rose to the occasion showing absolutely no fear for the big waves! Abel had a tough time when his lines crossed and had to re-launch his kite on the beach.
So the winner for the men’s Ocean Spirit Wave Masters single elimination 2009 was Jesse Richman and the women’s, Kirsty Jones!

At 7pm it was time to take advantage of the conditions and run the double elimination rounds. They were not completed but we managed to get through a few rounds which can hopefully be completed tomorrow if conditions permit.

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 3

Welcome to day 3 on the KPWT Santa Cruz Wave Masters Grand Slam 2009.
The day for the Wave Riders started at 12h00 with a skippers meeting and not much wind. The riders were kept on standby until conditions were evaluated again at 14h00.

Activities on the beach included: self-defense classes in KRAV MAGA, beach volleyball and to enjoy the surfing and kayaking competitions on the water. The local television production crew is broadcasting a live stream from the beach available online at www.santacruzoceanspirit.org/OS_LIVETV.html

The race director kept the riders on standby until 18h00, as conditions seem to get better in the afternoon. Unfortunately today, the wind just never came, swell was good at about 1.5 meters, but tomorrow looks good so hopefully we can continue with the single elimination second round for men.

Skippers meeting tomorrow will be at 11am and I think we are in for some great Wave Master action!
The main stage will host Marcelinho da Lua ft MC Angelo B, Takama Zion and Freshkitos tonight, all promising to get the dance floor bouncing! Thank you again to all the sponsors for their support, the week ahead is jammed packed with action with the KPWT Wave Masters, Skim Boarding Championships, a host of international bands and some entertaining beach action!

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Masters 2009 Day 2

Day two started with a 10h00 skippers meeting for all the Wave Riders and conditions were looking good.

KPWT Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit Wave Master then kicked off at 16h00 with the first rounds for men. The riders were all very excited for the chance to get onto the water and impress the spectators on the beach.

High tide pulled in and the waves were now pushing to 2 meters with a good northerly wind at around 15 knots.

The first rounds in single elimination for men started and Cameron Dietrich (HAW, CABRINHA) looked good, using the conditions as best he could, accustomed to his big wave Hawaii style. He will face Abel Lago (SPA, RRD) who defeated the local rider Bruno Melo in the second round. Henrique Claudio (POR), who is from the local team decided to put himself to the test and take on the worlds best! He performed well on the waves he selected, with kick-backs on the face and used the power in his kite well. He will face Jesse Richman (HAW, CABRINHA), who came third at the first Wave Masters event in Germany.

Unfortunately conditions shifted a little too much as the tied had come in and wind dropped off to under 10 knots. The second round for the single elimination for men was not completed and the women’s heats will start hopefully tomorrow if the wind returns.

Tonight’s festivities promise to bring in huge support and there is an exciting buzz around the beach. Lets hope that tomorrow there is wind and some good swell!
