Day 3

It was an exciting day here in Dakhla, Morocco. The wind was a bit lighter than the previous day, however competitors came prepared with their 10-14m kites. The freestyle double eliminations got underway around 10:00am this morning with winds ranging anywhere from 15-20 knots. The freestyle double elimination ladder was posted announcing the most extreme lineup of awesome riders to battle it out early in the first round of heats.

Riders such as Marc Jacobs (Switch, NZL), Alvaro Onieva (Slingshot, ESP), Michael Schitzhofer (Best, AUT), Sebastien Garat (RRD, FRA) and Tom Hebert (North, NCL) were amongst those top names riders. A total of four rounds of the men’s freestyle double eliminations were completed today. Marc Jacobs (Switch, NZL) was on fire today winning four consecutive heats moving him up the elimination ladder to compete for 5th or 6th place against Tom Hebert (North, NCL). Jacobs had to surrender the heat against Hebert due to an injured hand from a previous heat. Hebert has been on top of his game today defeating three contenders leading him to fight for 4th or 5th place against Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, ITA), which will resume tomorrow. Sebastien Garat (RRD, FRA) also had a great competition day defeating Michael Schitzhofer (Best, AUT) in the first round along with Liam Whaley (Naish, ESP) and Ariel Corniel (Ozone, DOM) but was later eliminated by Tom Hebert (North, NCL) in the fourth round.

A total of three heats in the women’s freestyle double elimination were held today. Kari Schibevaag (Ozone, NOR) defeated Holly Kennedy (North, GRB) as well as Celine Rodenas (Best, FRA) whom eliminated Nuria Goma (Liquid Force, ESP) in heat #18, which led Schibevaag to the next round of heats to take on Asia Litwin (Nobile, POL), which will resume tomorrow.

The freestyle double eliminations will resume tomorrow when the Minister of Sports joins in on all the kiteboarding action and to witness the end to the great event here in Dakhla, Morocco.

Shortly after 3:00pm the competition moved to the wave discipline where a total of one round of the men’s double elimination was completed. The wind and wave conditions began to diminish therefore the competition wrapped up for the day.

Tomorrow is the final day of competition here in Dakhla, Morocco. The mandatory skipper’s meeting is set for 9:00am tomorrow morning.

Day 2

It was a great day for all the wave discipline riders in Dakhla, Mexico. The wind was in full force, averaging approximately 25 knots most of the day. Riders were out on 5-7m kites ripping the immense world-class waves. Dakhla is without a doubt a great spot for wave riding, with set after set of clean waves fit for the best wave competitors in the world.

In the women’s wave riding division Kari Schibevaag (Ozone, NOR) was on fire today with her clean, aggressive riding style confirming that she’s nothing less than an outstanding wave rider. Schibevaag maintained the highest scoring wave with an average of 15.34 until the last heat of the day. Keahi De Aboitiz (Cabrinha, AUT) broke Schibevaag’s high score in the men’s wave single elimination final with an average total score of 15.64. Schibevaag went on to defeat Angela Peral (North, ESP) in the women’s final with a score of 11.05 points while Peral took second place with an overall score of 10.17 points. The fight for third place was very tight with a tie finish between Ainhoa Garcia (Airush, ESP) and Milla Ferreira (Best, BRA) with an average of 8.84 points. The tie was broke due to a higher scored wave by Garcia earning her third place while Ferreira takes fourth.

The men wave riders were all out to take first place, however only the best wave rider of the day would be able to earn the wave single elimination title. Australian rider, Keahi De Aboitiz (Cabrinha AUT) was the man on top today finishing in first place today with a score of 15.64 points. His best wave was his third wave scoring an average of 8.34 points, one judge gave him a 9 which was the highest score given in the wave single elimination. Airton Cozzolino finished in second place with his swift turning style and wave cutting maneuvers while Abel Lago (RRD, ESP) maintained an overall high performance with his aggressive stylish bottom turns and smooth cut backs which enabled him to finish the wave single eliminations in third place.

Tomorrow’s mandatory skippers meeting is set for 8:00am with a 9:00am first possible start for freestyle and wave discipline to follow in the afternoon.

Day 1

It was a full on windy day at the campsite in Dakhla, Morocco. The wind blew the dozen of national flags from all around the world on the beach averaging 25-35 knots under sunny skies. The atmosphere around the camp is pretty lively and everyone seems to having a great time. All the riders were very eager to pump up their small kites to get out on the water. The wave conditions for the week are looking fantastic, which will be great for all the wave riders who are looking for World-Class wave riding.

Competitors from countries such as Spain, France, New Caledonia, Australia, Cabo Verde, New Zealand, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Poland, Serbia, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, United Kingdom, and Morocco to name more than a dozen made their way to the registration line this morning in hopes of getting their chance to battle it out against the best wave and freestyle riders in the world.

The freestyle trials got underway shortly after lunch. The competition level this season is very high, and most will have to step up their game in order to move up the elimination ladder. Riders struggled against the conditions that Mother Nature handed out today. Advancing into the main event from the freestyle trials to the freestyle single elimination will be; Erik Volpe (Slingshot, ITA), Liam Whaley (Naish, ESP), Mario Rodwald (North, GER), Michael Schitzhofer (Best, AUT), Thomas Paris (North, FRA), Alvaro Onieva (Slingshot, ESP), Ariel Corniel (Ozone, DOM), Sebastien Garat (RRD, FRA), Alex Soto (F-ONE, DOM), Christophe Tack (Liquid Force, BEL), Nils Wesch (Naish, GER), and Robinson Hilario (F-ONE, DOM).

Tomorrow’s wind and wave forecast is looking great therefore we will run the complete wave single eliminations. The Dakhla Kiteboarding World Cup 2011 is organized by the PKRA, Association Lagon Dakhla and supported in part by la Wilaya de la Region de Oued Eddahab-Lagouira, l’Agence pour la promotion et le developpement economique et social des provinces du Royaume, La Marocaine Des Jeux et Des Sports, La Maison de l’artisan, Ministere de la Jeunesse et de l’Artisanat.

eindelijk is het internet snel genoeg om deze pagina helemaal te laden
Vandaag waren het de trials zodus moesten Christophe en Johnno aan de slag.
Helaas moesten ze in de eerste heat al tegen elkaar..
Beide toonden ze heel wat moois. Johnno had een paar echt dik gepowerde tricks maar landde heel wat minder dan Christophe.
Christophe vaarde redelijk constant maar met iets minder power dan Johnno. Hiermee kon hij de jury overtuigen en kon Christophe direct door naar het main event.

Johnno moest een hele weg afleggen, maar helaas werd hij verslagen en haalde het main event niet..
Ik merkte wel op dat Johnno heel wat progressie gemaakt heeft. De power in z'n tricks is echt goed, maar de condities zijn best hard en dan kan het zijn dat je de tricks met zoveel power net niet kan landen.
De kwalificaties zijn eigenlijk al een wedstrijd op zich, want er waren iets van 30 gasten die deelnamen aan de trials.

Morgen is het tijd voor de wave en in de middag misschien al de start van de singles.
Wind is hardcore en al de hele week voor 5, 6 of 7 vierkante meter!!

Hopelijk morgen weer een update, maar ik kan niets beloven met dit internet.
Spot is btw echt mooi. Als je hier tien min downwind loopt kom je op een vlakke spot uit welke echt sick is!!
Foto's en filmpje komen heel misschien morgen online. Echt irritant dat het internet zo slecht is..

en alweer een drukke dag voorbij.
vanmorgen om half 9 vertrokken naar de wavespot. Kwamen gedurende de hele dag mooie setjes binnen van toch zeker 2meter
Bij de dames toonde Kari Schibbevaag dat ze de sterkste was en zodus de finale won van half nederlandse Angela Peral..
Bij de heren was Keahi De Aboitiz de sterkste en hij versloeg in de finale de italiaan .... (ben z'n naam ff kwijt)
nu bedtijd. Morgen om 8u skippersmeeting en het kan zowel wave als freestyle worden.

Dat ligt ongeveer 1200km noordelijker.

De wavespot van Dakhla heet Oum Labiour.
Wind is vaak sideshore tot schuin aflandig en de golven komen clean binnen (niet altijd even powerfull, maar vlak bij het strand staat sowieso een dikke beachbreak waar ze hol dichtklappen.
