Day 4:

The men were the first to test the area with Micheal Shitzhoffer(*???) and Jerry Van derkopp(*???) doing their best to make something out of the tough conditions, from there thankfully the conditions only improved with the wind swinging more side-shore making it less gusty and averaging a solid 25-30knots the whole day. The men were riding 7m kites whilst the women were mostly on 5-6m.

Jacobs Egypt 2014

The womens double elimination was one of the most hotly contested to date, with all girls giving it their all to improve upon their first round seeding. Manuela Jungo, Malin Amle and Annabel Vanwesterop all had very credible heats but sadly were unable to make it back into the final four. It was Anneloose Lammerts who once again surprised everyone with a great heat against Bruna Kayjia knocking her from the 3rd place and giving her a chance at the second place spot. She rode an extremely close heat against Gisela Pulido leading for most of it until Pulido managed to put together a few tricks in the dying minutes and keep her place.

mario Egypt 2014

The Womens final was once again an Pulido vs Winkowska affair and much like yesterdays final it seemed to be Winkowska narrowly leading for most of it due to slightly better kite positioning and power in her tricks. Winkowska also managed to land a nice backmobe towards the end of the heat (score) that no doubt sealed the deal. Scores overall were (scores). Winkowska has now won a total of 3 events this year coming 3rd only once and showing that she’s truly motivated to once again reach for the world title.

Podium Egypt 2014

The mens double elimination was exciting to watch with the strong gusty wind giving riders a chance to throw some big tricks and some even bigger crashes. Everyone was riding well for the conditions but it would be right to say that today was no-doubt Liam Whaleys day. Whaley had a methodical approach to heats doing only what he needed to win but in a way that provided him with some of the highest scoring heats of the day. The young Spaniard came all the way from dead last position, through 8(???) heats including the Brazillians (Carlos Mario, Eudazio Dasilva and Alex Neto) to come up against the winner of yesterdays single elimination Christophe Tack.  Whaleys front blind mobes amongst other tricks were some of the nicest seen in competition so far and we’re sure that this kid still has a bright future ahead of him. However it was once again to be Christophe Tacks day. Tack didn’t ride as good as days previous, but he did enough to take the win and narrowly defeat Whaley by a .4 margin. Tack has also now won 3 events this year and has come second at another, showing that he’s well on his way to winning the world title this year.

Day 3:

Riders woke to still palms oily waters and thick hot air, it was the type of day that if you were a regular tourist you’d likely have taken a picture and posted it to all your friends back home. The calm didn’t continue for long however as at 10am (as forecast) the breeze kicked in from practically no where. Some riders were taken by surprise but all were rearing and ready to get in the water, cool down and get some heats finished.

The comp kicked off with the continuation of round two mens and womens single elimination ladders. With a slight adjustment of the competition box riders were blessed with really flat water, a great arena to throw their biggest tricks and show everyone that they are no-doubt the worlds best riders.

The Womens ladder had a slight switch up again this event with Bruna Kajiya making a return to the 3rd place position, posting a very tight heat with Gisela Pulido and showing that she’s once again a force to be reckoned with. Bruna Suffered a Serious ACL injury in August last year and she’s just now starting to return to full fitness. A big surprise for most this event was the womens rookie Annelous Lammerts, she put on a series of hard fought heats between both Karolina Winkowska and Bruna Kajiya showing that her training this year has been paying off and that she too can keep up with the best of them. Lets see how she performs in the double elimination tomorrow and whether she can keep the ball rolling.

The Womens final was an all too familiar site with Karolina Winkowska from Poland coming up against Gisela Pulido from Spain. Both girls looked to be at home in the flat conditions with 313, Slim Chance and S-Bend to blind being common ground between the two. In the end it was to be Karolina Winkowskas day however riding a slightly more powered heat and winning by a margin of almost 4 points (30.76 vs 26.52).

Competition was fierce on the mens side the Brazilians showed that in such conditions they truly are a force to be reckoned with. The young Carlos Mario really stepped his game up this event and propelled himself into the 4th place position narrowly being defeated by his elder countryman Eudazio Dasilva. Both men had a technical approach to the loosers final with Double Heart Attacks and Double Backside S-Mobes being common ground between the two, in the end though it was Dasilva that edged Mario out with his comp experience and slightly more powered approach to trick selection.

The Mens final was an exciting one with both Alexandre Neto and Christophe Tack having a similar bag of tricks and the ability to put together a world class act. Both riders came out strong with massive Slim 540s’s, Crow Mobe 540’s and Front Blind Mobes making it almost impossible to pick who might actually be in the lead throughout most the heat. It was Tack however that brought it all home in the end with an impeccable Backside 315 and a KGB 540 that looked like it would be hard to beat. Neto answered back however with a Backside 315 and KGB 540 of his own but it just wasn’t enough to bring him back. Tack took the final out with an impressive heat total of (37.7 vs 33.21) and a single trick score for a KGB 540 of (8.4). All four men appeared really stoked to be together on the podium and it will be interesting to see whether this line up will hold fast in the double elimination.

Tomorrows forecast calls for strong wind from the early morning giving us a great chance to finish the double elimination. With a first possible start at 9am make sure you up early to catch all the action!

Day 2:

Day two of competition begun with what appeared to be a nice repeat of the previous morning, warm weather, clear skies and a nice moderate sea breeze, however sadly it just wasn’t to be and by 10am the wind had all but fizzled out to nothing with no chance to even finish the first heat.

This wasn’t to the detriment of riders however as there are lots of interesting things to fill time with in and around the resort. Many riders went scuba diving, snorkling, wakeboarding, swimming in the sea and playing water polo in the resort pool, while others simply took it as a great chance for some needed R&R after a long day previous.

Tomorrows forecast is looking better all the time with the locals and crew quite hopeful that we will run at least part of the competition tomorrow. Make sure you don’t miss out by remembering to tune into the Livestream,  Facebook and Twitter feeds to keep updated on all the crazy action!

Day 1:

whaley-egypt-day1.jpg

Day one started on a typical Soma Bay note, drowsy riders up for the 6am start were woken by the bright sun and beautiful clear waters of the bay, with a steady 20knot breeze buzzing through kites and event flags it was sure to be a great day. The trail elimination format was run before lunch to give some new and old faces a chance to compete in the main event.

Most of the big names made it through the mens trials alongside tour rookie Linus Erdmann from Germany, doing his best again to make it into another main event. We also saw an old face Forrest Bakker from Spain return with a new face on his kite and a steady selection of tricks propelling him also into the main draw. Sadly young Tom Bridge (UK) narrowly missed out on a place in the main event this time but I’m sure we will see him again soon and probably 5ft taller and going 5ft higher if his brothers are anything to go by!

The womens ladder was a full one with even the trials being tightly contested. The tension was thick as the girls went to battle, with most of women on such a similar level technically that it made for interesting watch. However it was to be Amle, Oja, Vieira, Lange and Brochocka who were lucky enough to make it through this time. It’s great to see more and more women at these stops and we only hope it continues.

After a short lunch the single elimination got underway around 3pm, with male riders using 11m kites in the beginning all the way down to a 7m near the end of the day, some Women were on as small as 5m. On the womens side of the draw Malin Amle seemed to have it together today showing how a taller rider can get that big pop if you get it all right, throwing down a couple of clean S-Bends to blind to the surprise of some of her competitors. Lammerts Oja and Jungo also all progressed through into round 2 where things will really start to heat up, make sure you tune in and don’t miss out!

The mens competition elimination was fought hard as always but by the end of the day there were a few clear standouts. Sergei Borisov from Russia seemed to have a lot of support from the crowd and it looked like it was helping, passing both his heats for the day and advancing into round three. You could tell by the smile on his face he was more than happy with the outcome, as this is one guy that has seemed to be somewhat unlucky in events previous.

Top honours have to go to Liam Whaley from Tarifa however who put down some amazing heats, throwing big Front Blind Mobes and Double Heart Attacks in the tricky conditions. Liam injured his ribs at the start of the year and hasn’t been riding as well as he can the last few competitions, with that now behind him it will also be interesting to see how this young Spaniard performs in the following days.

Special mention also must also go to Eudazio Da Silva, riding solid and committed the all day. This guy seems to be able to adapt to many different conditions, hailing from the kiteboarding mecca of Brazil where the repetitive conditions give him the ideal platform to fine tune a consistent competitive approach to heats. He’s also in round 3 so lets see if he can push it that bit harder this event and make a podium in the days to come.

With a jam packed elimination ladder and the singles just getting down to the crunch be sure to tune in these days to come on our Livestream.

Registration day:

Registration for the fourth freestyle stop on the 2014 PKRA calendar started today on the pristine shores of Soma Bay, Egypt. This is the maiden year for this PKRA location with both organisers and contestants holding high hopes for running what could be considered one of the premier stops on the 2014 PKRA calendar.

Clear skies and light wind gave some of the smaller competitors a chance to get in tune with the competition layout and also gave keen onlookers something to cheer about. With 63 riders registered stretching across 22 nationalities this competition is sure to be a heated one with light to strong consistent winds and warmer weather giving riders the ultimate opportunity to show the world their all. Young British rider Tom Bridge has also signed up for the event and in training today showed a few of the veterans that he to can punch it out with the big boys, keep your eyes peeled to see how this future star goes.

Tomorrows forecast shows stronger wind in the early morning (as is often the case in the red sea) so riders will have to be prepared bright an early for a 7am skippers meeting with a 7:30am first possible start.

opening ceremony

Once again this is sure to be another thrilling event so be sure you don’t miss out on any of the action on our LIVESTREAM or if you’ve got to much work to do you can still keep updated on the PKRA Facebook and Twitter Feeds with start times, contest results and much more!

Long live the king, Mowgli! Finished to win the singles... Congrats, Tackie, keep it up!

Everybody was a beginner once, but there's nothing wrong with ambition.
