So this weekend, the wind was blowing and we headed down to our local beach first thing in the morning to do some land boarding while the tide was out, before later going out on the water when the lagoons had filled up a bit.
Simon from Best was there with a new 11m Yarga, and having flown old C shaped LEIs, like the ‘05 Yarga, on land, before moving onto Waroos we were pretty keen to test out this new hybrid kite, to see what all the fuss was about.
The kite was setup in 4 line SLE mode and I was a bit nervous of destroying this brand new, not even out yet, kite. So Tom “captain cocky†flew it first and straight away seemed really comfortable with it flying around the beach, jumping all over the place. After 5 minutes I’d had enough of watching and demanded a go on the new Yarga.
I was amazed at how quickly I got to grips with the kite, everything about it just felt really really good. With a bit more bar pressure than a Waroo the new Yarga felt solid and responsive, with loads of depower for when things got a bit hairy. After a couple of jumps it seemed to click. Sending it hard and fast gave great pop, I was going big and I was really impressed with the hang time on the way down whilst redirecting the kite.
The direct predictability of the kite inspired confidence and I was pleased that I managed to pull some nice footouts and a 720 after only 15 minutes on the kite. The new Yarga turns sharp and fast, and I would have loved to have done some kiteloops with it but I didn’t want to risk smashing such a new kite into the ground, so I settled for a few fast sliding downloop transitions instead. This kite definitely gets the adrenaline pumping.
Overall, after flying the kite for a total of about 30mins I’m in love, I want one, my kite wish list just keeps getting longer.
