Day 3 - Kite-Extreme Brasil 2008

Kite-Xtreme Brasil 2008 is on its third day, continuing with the double eliminations after an action-packed second day that saw Aaron Hadlow winning his first freestyle single trophy in Brazil. The double elimination event promises to be yet an even more exciting competition to see whether Kevin Langeree could keep up his bid for the world championship title and beat Hadlow in the finals.

Yet another impressive day greeted the crowd at Parnaiba today, with clear blue skies, warm weather with light winds in the morning. The mandatory skippers meeting went right on schedule. Although the competitors were ready to go at the scheduled starting time, the wind was too light to start an event so the heats were postponed from the planned 12:00 noon start until 12:30 pm. The first heat was started only to cancel it since the wind was very inconsistent and fluctuated in intensity. Finally at around 1:10 pm, the first heat of the double elimination got underway after the wind finally gained strength and stabilized at approximately 17 to 20 knots. The men rigged their 10 to 12 meter kites while the women were on their 7 to 9 meters.

A total of four rounds for the men and one round for the women were completed during the day which wrapped up at 5:00 pm.

Day 3 Highlights

The first round of the men’s double had two elimination heats. The first heat was between Andy Yates (Slingshot, AUS) and Eli Zarka (F-One, ISR) whose first run was cancelled due to a lack of wind. The second time around, there was enough wind to go so the day continued on. Yates landed a regular and switch slim, 313 5, blind judge, front mobe, kgb, mobe 5 and late pass mobe, defeating Zarka with an advantage on variation and technical difficulty. The Israeli rider landed a front mobe, slim, blind judge 3 and 313. Victor Adamo (Naish, BRA) defeated Bobo Corniel (EH, DOM) in the other heat to advance to the next round.

In round two, Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, ITA) managed to out-style Tom Court (North, GBR) in a solid showing of kiteboarding talent, landing several regular and switch moves. Court also landed some nice moves but lacked the switch tricks.

Evandro Da Silva (Naish, BRA) took out Yates in heat #23 with four regular and switch moves and a double back mobe 5, winning with a higher technical difficulty level and trick variation. The next heat saw a very tight battle between two Brazilian riders. Silvio Villarim (Kiteloose) defeated Tour regular Reno Romeu (North) with a regular and switch variation of front mobe/back to blind air pass/mobe, a blind judge with air pass, and slim. Romeu landed a kgb, blind judge with aerial handle pass, front mobe, regular and switch slim, kiteloop handle pass, late pass mobe, mobe and 313. Villarim won with a 3-2 decision for switch variation and power.

The third round started with another super tight match up between the Cabrinha riders, Alberto Rondina (ITA) and Petr Tyuskevich (RUS). Rondina landed more powered moves and switch variations (kgb, slim, kiteloop handle pass, blind judge with aerial handle pass, 313) against Tyuskevich’s (slim, front mobe, back to blind air pass) and got the edge over the line for a decisive 5-0 win.

day3-2-press.jpg

Alvaro Onieva (Best, ESP) also had his share of a tight battle going up against Tom Hebert (Airush, New Caledonia) in heat #27. The two style masters went against each other trick after trick but Onieva got the upper hand in the end with a little more technical riding for the double pass moves to win via a 4-1 score. Onieva landed a regular and switch kgb/front mobe, slim, mobe to wrapped, kiteloop non-inverted slim, indy grab, blind judge with air pass, and a front side 5 off one of the small kickers rolling in. Hebert landed a regular and switch indy grab kgb/mobe, slim, kiteloop slim and hasselhoff.

The Dominican destroyer, Ariel Corniel (EH) took down Rondina in heat #28 with high flying moves and two double passes for a 4-1 win. Rondina performed extremely well with regular and switch variations of blind judge/313/non-inverted slim/kiteloop handle pass/kiteloop slim/mobe, a shifty 5, s-bend to blind and kgb. Corniel landed a mobe, slim, 313, mobe to wrapped, kiteloop non-inverted slim, blind judge with aerial handle pass, kgb, front mobe, backside 360, double s-bend to blind, s-bend to blind air pass, front mobe to blind and kiteloop backside.

On the women’s side, local rider Carol Homsi defeated Audrey Meyer (EH, FRA) in the first heat of the ladies event with a 3-2 score. Homsi landed a single handle pass against Meyer’s raley to surface pass, kiteloop frontloop and back to surface pass.
Susi Mai (Cabrinha, GER) defeated Laura Fernandez with a raley to blind, raley to wrapped, front to blind and kiteloop winning with a higher technical difficulty score.

Day 2 - Kite-Extreme Brasil 2008

It would seem that Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, GBR) is hell bent on winning the Brazilian title of the second to the last stop of the PKRA 2008 World Tour here in Piaui, Brazil. Going into the second day of Kite-Xtreme Brasil 2008, Hadlow already is making history once again by winning his first-ever Brazilian freestyle singles title and if he makes it in the doubles event past Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) the Chile Tour stop will be a magnificent Tour climax.

Day 2 started out like any typical Brazilian day – warm weather, perfect wind condition, and plenty of people on the beach. The sun was in full force, the sky was clear and the temperature rose to 36° Celsius during high noon while the wind maxed out at 18 knots (5 bft.) forming moderate waves for some nice kickers. The wind turned up to be offshore in the morning but went back to its usual direction, side onshore, and strength by 11:00 am.

The mandatory skippers meeting started at 11:30 am at the beach. After half an hour, the race director sounded the horn signaling the continuation of the freestyle singles event.

The competition wrapped up at 3:00 pm with the doubles elimination to be started tomorrow.

Day 2 Highlights

The ladies got the chance to start the day’s events. Opening up the action was heat #5 between Jo Wilson (Naish, GBR) and teammate Karolina Winkowska (Naish, POL). Winkowska dominated the heat with a blind judge, raley to blind, s-bend to blind, slim and raley to wrapped, winning with a higher technical score on handle passes. Wilson had an awesome heat with a raley to blind, downloop to blind, back to blind, blind judge and a high handle pass but weren’t enough to convince the judges on technical matters. In the same heat, Bruna Kajiya (Best, BRA) defeated Joanna Litwin (Nobile, POL) in a close heat which would probably count as one of the best heats we’ve seen so far from the women. Kajiya performed with more power plus slight technical advantage to take the win.

Current PKRA World #4 Angela Peral (North, ESP) defeated Susi Mai (Cabrinha, GER) in the sixth heat with a downloop to blind and raley to blind, winning with more power over Mai’s raley to blind and front to blind. Current women world title holder Gisela Pulido (Slingshot, ESP) had an easy heat against local girl Carol Homsi also in the sixth heat. Pulido then went on to defeat Peral in the semi-final to face Kajiya for the top podium spot.

As expected, Brazilian champ Bruna Kajiya dominated the 7th heat going into the finals against Winkowska with home ground advantage and got the chance to take home the trophy. Winkowska went on to defeat Peral in the loosers final with more trick variation and a higher technical difficulty score.

day2-5-press.jpg

The final round of the women’s freestyle was a familiar sight as two of the top PKRA riders battled it out for the women’s single freestyle title and a bigger chunk of the prize money. With the home crowd cheering on her side, Kajiya went move for move, landing a blind judge, s-bend to blind, back to blind air pass, blind judge with aerial handle pass, non-inverted slim, and a 313. Pulido on the other hand, landed a front mobe, blind judge, 313, s-bend to blind, slim, back to blind air pass and mobe. Kajiya won the event with a much more significant execution, power and height advantage although Gisela had the slight advantage on trick variation.

In the 13th heat of the men’s freestyle, Tomas Texeira (RRD, BRA) defeated Ariel Corniel (EH, DOM) in a very close but 4-1 decision. The Brazilian rider won with a little more switch variation and huge kiteloop slims. Also in the same heat, Tour world title challenger Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) knocked down a frustrated Sebastien Garat’s (RRD, FRA), ending the French rider’s chance to the podium. Garat crashed several moves, even changed his kite midway through the heat and struggled to match Langeree’s technical level, variation and power.

In the 14th heat, Alex Pastor (Naish, ESP) continued his climb up the ladder, defeating Mikael Blomvall (Nobile, SWE) with more power and height. A regular and switch mobe/slim/kgb, shifty 360, kiteloop 5, front mobe 5 and blind judge with aerial handle pass for Pastor proved enough to beat Blomvall’s regular and switch mobe/slim/kgb, blind judge with aerial handle pass, kiteloop 3 and double s-bend to blind.

Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, GBR) had everything under control in the same heat and was hell bent in winning the trophy, taking down Cesar Portas (North, ESP) in the same heat. Portas had one of his best heats this season but there’s just no stopping Hadlow who landed a regular and switch slim/front mobe/back to blind air pass/mobe, front mobe to blind, blind judge to blind, s-bend to blind with aerial handle pass, blind judge with air pass, shifty 3 and hasselhoff. Portas stomped his own regular and switch moves (slim/blind judge with air pass/kgb) plus a front mobe 5, mobe and blind judge 5.

day2-10-press.jpg

In the semi-final, Langeree ended Teixera’s run in the 15th heat taking the first spot in the finals. Hadlow added Pastor to his “these guys can’t stop me” list with a showcase of kiteboarding firepower. However, Pastor managed to recover his loss to Hadlow taking down Teixera in the battle for third place overall with more switch variation, height and a higher technical difficulty level for a 3-2 win.

day2-7-press.jpg

The men’s finals was also an all too-familiar event between the top two PKRA freestylers but this round is even more exciting as Langeree is keen on winning this year’s title while Hadlow is determined to win his first-ever Brazilian title and defend his world title. A total of 17 moves for each rider summed up the heat. Langeree landed a regular and switch front mobe/kgb, 313, non-inverted slim, double back mobe, kiteloop slim, a huge kiteloop 7, back side air pass, blind judge with aerial handle pass, blind judge 5 and mobe to wrapped. Hadlow’s regular and switch mobe/slim/kgb,hasselhoff, shifty 5, slim to wrapped, s-bend to blind air pass, front mobe to blind, blind judge 5, and a mobe 7 won the heat. Overall, it was a very close heat with several double passes from both riders. Kevin’s moves were packed with a little more power and height but Hadlow had an advantage on the technical difficulty side with the switch variations and extra double pass for a 4-1 decision.

Congratulations to Aaron Hadlow and Bruna Kajiya for winning the singles freestyle event!

Tomorrow’s skippers meeting is scheduled at 11:30 am with a first possible start of 12:00 pm.

Day 1 - Kite-Extreme Brasil 2008

Barely ten days after the Canadian stop of the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) World Tour, thirty eight professional kiteboarders from 16 different countries are once again celebrating another exciting venue of the Tour with the opening of the Kite-Extreme Brasil 2008. The event is being held at the northern coast of Piaui, Brazil in the city of Parnaiba – one of Brazil’s famous kite spots.

day1-9-press.jpg

This Tour stop brings a total of $40,000 prize money and an important venue for two of the top PKRA riders, Netherland’s Kevin Langeree and United Kingdom’s Aaron Hadlow who are both gunning for the World Championship Title. Langeree became the first PKRA rider in the men’s division to have a repeat win in Cabarete. On the other hand, Hadlow has never won in Brazil and is looking for his first ever Brazilian title so it will be an exciting event to follow.

Day 1 Highlights

Day one started out on time under perfect weather conditions. The sky was perfectly clear with the temperature peaking at 34° Celsius during mid-afternoon. The average wind speed was recorded between 18 to 25 knots which provided the fuel to complete two rounds of the men and one round of the women’s freestyle events. The wind was lighter during the morning at around 18 knots compared to yesterday during the training but by the time the first heat started, the wind had filled in and was very consistent for the rest of the day with minor lulls from time to time. Most of the men rigged their either their 7-meter to 10-meters kites.

day1-8-press.jpg

The mandatory riders meeting went right on schedule at 10:30 am. After an hour and a half, the men’s heats started followed by the women’s heats which lasted until 3:45 pm.

Ariel Corniel (DOM) of EH Kiteboarding is back on the Tour with an exciting comeback, defeating Tom Court (GBR) of North Kiteboarding in the first heat of the day. Court crashed early on in the heat and then again later with his kite deflating in the water. Corniel was on fire and was keen on making a good impression winning with a higher technical difficulty score plus more variation. Corniel then knocked out Tom Hebert (Airush, New Caledonia) in the 9th heat of round two with much more variation and a higher technical difficulty score including a s-bend to blind air pass, blind judge, mobe, slim, double back mobe, kgb, late pass mobe and a toeside 360 against Hebert’s regular and switch slim/mobe, kgb and front mobe.

day1-7-press.jpg

Local rider Tomas Teixera (BRA) broke the front lines of his RRD kite early on in heat #2b but thanks to a great team on the beach, he was able to grab another kite and stomped several moves to run away with a tight win over Florian Daubos (FRA). Teixera won with a 3-2 decision for cleaner execution and bigger moves. He then continued his charged up the ladder by defeating Tour regular Alvaro Onieva (Best, ESP) in heat #9b of the second round with more variety, landing a regular and switch mobe/blind judge, shifty 360, slim, kiteloop slim, mobe to wrapped, front side 360 and back to blind air pass. Onieva landed a mobe 5, slim, back side 360 and front side 5.

In the third heat, Sebastien Garat (RRD, FRA) won against Andy Yates (Slingshot, AUS) with a decisive win. In a re-run of the closely contested heat in Canada, Garat had a point to prove and went about business, landing a regular and switch slim, regular and switch back to blind air pass, mobe to wrapped, front mobe, blind judge with aerial handle pass and shifty 360.

day1-2-press.jpg

After the match between Garat and Yates, North Kiteboarding’s Reno Romeu (BRA) took the home ground advantage to win against Eli Zarka (F-One, ISR), landing a nice indy glide to front side 360 amongst several other great moves. However, his win was short-lived as he was stopped in the 10th heat by Garat who rode with more technical difficulty and cleaner executions including a regular and switch back to blind air pass, regular and switch slim, front mobe 5, s-bend to blind, mobe 5, blind judge and front mobe. Romeu landed a regular and switch slim, 313, blind judge with aerial handle pass, front mobe, late pass mobe and kgb.

The 10th heat also proved to be a ‘warm up’ heat for World title challenger Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) against Kleber Pinho (BRA). The Brazilian rider tried his heart out to beat Langeree in this heat but proved no match for the Dutch destroyer. With a mobe 5, slim, blind judge and kiteloop slim but with several crashes, Langeree went on to do his usual repertoire of tricks and moved into the next round.

In contrast, the 11th heat was a super-tight battle between Mikael Blomvall (Nobile, SWE) and another great local rider Evandro Da Silva (Naish, BRA). Blomvall landed several solid moves to score a 3-2 win over Da Silva, winning with a higher technical difficulty score for his regular and switch moves (mobe, blind judge 3, kgb) and cleaner execution.

The 12th heat was also a very close fight between Cesar Portas (North, ESP) and Petr Yuskevich (Cabrinha, RUS) but still a 5-0 decision in favor of the Spanish rider. The heat was evenly matched for moves but Portas won over technical difficulty and power with a front mobe 5 giving him just enough to win the heat.

Also in the same heat, the Italian stallion Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, ITA) succumbed to the awesome riding power of tour leader Aaron Hadlow (Fexifoil, GBR). Rondina gave all his might in this heat and threw down as much as he could but unfortunately, most of it ended in big crashes and could only manage to land a mobe, s-bend to blind, back to blind air pass, blind judge with aerial handle pass and a 313. Hadlow landed a lot of tricks which are too many to mention including a nice mobe 720 and nearly a blind judge 5 in the last seconds.

The women’s events had a rough first heat straight away with Jo Wilson (Naish, GBR) coming thru with the win against Audrey Meyer (EH, FRA) via a higher technical difficulty score. Wilson landed a raley to blind, downloop to blind and a back to blind plus a vulcan to surface pass and a butt-checked high handle pass. Meyer landed a few nice moves but lacked the blind moves for technical difficulty.

In the second heat, Joanna Litwin (Nobile, POL) defeated Laura Fernandez (Cabrinha, ESP) with a blind judge, raley to blind and slim against the Spanish rider’s front loop/down loop, a surface pass, tail grab air and a double back loop. Litwin won via technical difficulty.

Despite riding with a borrowed gear, Marilou Lavallee (North, CAN) gave Angela Peral (North, ESP) a run for her money with several powered moves. A huge kiteloop-backloop, back to toeside and an indy glide gave Peral a scare but not enough technical difficulty to defeat the Spanish rider’s raley to blind, downloop to blind and krypt to surface pass moves.

Tomorrow, the skippers meeting is scheduled at 11:30 am with first possible start at 12 pm.

The 2008 KiteXtreme Brasil 2008 is being organize by the GEST Group thru the able leadership of General Director Erich Steffen and event coordinator Eduardo Piloni.
