Day 1: 14 July 2007 : Welcome to Fuerteventura: THE Island of EXTREMES
We, venture forth to Fuertevntura, the Island of Legend.
Strong wind, Azure, Waters, Desert Landscapes and the Biggest contest of the Windsurfing and Kiteboarding World. Whats it going to be like? No Idea! Radical by any chance?
I have been on the road now since the star of April, I’ve seen France, Spain, England, Wales, Italy & Holland. I’ve kited so many places and experienced so many things, but before I head home its seems the biggest challenge lies ahead!
On the Night of the 13th July , I still had no idea where I was going and what I was going to do once I got to the airport at Fuerte. It was all a mystery and I must admit I was a bit scared. I don’t speak a word of Spanish and because I was going early before the event I had no idea who If anyone I knew would be there already. But I put my man pants on , packed my stuff, said my goodbyes to all my new friends in the Uk and Prepared for an early morning.
I got a lifet with Wesley, from Hythe to Southampton Bus Station at 04.30, This took me to Heathrow. It was the busiest ive ever seen an airport but I managed to lug my Massive bags to a checkin Point and get It all sorted! A Long day of travelling lay ahead! London to Madrid. Madrid to Fuerte. I arrived all happy and smiley , my one bag came through straight away, then i sat and waited an hour with about 10 other people for our excess luggage but sadly it turned out its still in madrid! ill be recieving it tomo i hope! Anyway next - Airport to Costa Calma. On the bus to Costa calma I was staring out the window with my jaw on the ground. It looked like I had arrived on Mars. The earth was volcanic blac and tghere was nothing, absolutely nothing for miles and miles around. It seemed like a scene out of Lord of the rings, I Felt like I had just walked into Mordor. But Luckily it got better, the hazey grey sky turned to Blue and the Black Rocks turned into Golden sand the further we drove! John Grimm, Ex SA Stirrer came to my rescue and picked me up from the bus stop! He introdued me to the Beautiful lady in His life, Alisa and Evelyn and Johan from Sweden. They are to be my Family for the next few days until Taro arrives back from South Africa and the rest of the scene rocks up! I’m looking forward to it! A re-uniting of Many a Walvis bay: Alex Caizergues, Manu Taub, Sebastien Cattelan, Dirk Hanel and many more. It is going to go off! John Says that the wind hasn’t blown less than 20knots for the past 3 days. We went to check out the Rene Egli pro Center , the Speed Strip and the 2 tents of Legend. The One is to House the 300 profssional windsurfers and kitesurfers equipment for the duration of the event , and the other is a tent that houses 5000 people for the parties of the Century. Man o man am I in trouble or what???
John bought this classic Alda Niva for a bargain, sickest desert cruiser known to the island. Only problem is his driving, or maybe I can excuse him because there is a serious lack of roads here, you kind of have to pick a direction and drive.. So this resulted in a violent rocking motion up and down dunes and rocks to who knows where. My new temporary shelter turned out to be a sick Flat on the hill overlooking the contest area. NICE!
All good! I look forward to a shower and some sleep! Its much needed since I’m smelly and Comatosed. The Events Start during next Week, Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Speed & Freestyle. The Best of the Best from around the world here to show us how its done. I Almost feel out of place. I mean, Who am I to be here ? Well I hope for the best! Im Here a couple of days early and I hope to get a feel of the place, so not to make an ass of myself in front of all these Amazing Athletes! But yeah! I gotta do it! Push it, Take the pain with the gain and see what happens! Suppose fuerte is Part of my destiny, a test to see what im really made of before I head back home for the Destuction of Luderitz….. Exciting times! Keep reading for daily updates of my time in Fuerte! Who knows what lay ahead! Im about to have my first glass of Surf champagne, in case you are wondering its Sprite & Really cheap wine! It doesn’t taste too bad but after ages a couple of days of hardly any sleep I have a feeling im gonna be passed out very soon!

Update PKRA Speed World Cup Fuerteventura
