Last day of competition ends with a spectacular surprise

The Cabarete Kiteboarding World Cup 2010 has been nothing less than a spectacular and successful event. More than 20 nationalities made their way to Cabarete to test their skills against the world’s best kiteboarders. Today’s weather conditions did not look very promising, but around 13:00 the sun came out, and the wind began to pick up in strength. The double eliminations commenced at 13:40 under sunny blue skies. Numerous spectators made their way down to the beach in hopes of getting a glance of their favorite professional rider in action.

The first heat of the day was in the women’s division, Audrey Meyer (Naish, FRA) against Holly Kennedy (North, GRB). Meyer defeated Kennedy moving her onto the next heat against the 2009 womens freestyle champion Bruna Kajiya (Flexifoil, BRA). Kajiya was not on the top of her usual game here in Cabarete, however she was able to eliminate Meyer due to her better execution of tricks. It was a great day for Polish rider Karolina Winkowska (Slingshot, POL) who battled her way through two heats landing her into the final against Spanish rider Gisela Pulido (Airush, ESP). Pulido was without a doubt on fire, landing many technical tricks from a kite loop slim to a KGB switch, which would earn her first place in the double eliminations.

In the men’s division, Alex Soto (F-One, DOM) was on fire with his aggressive riding style. Soto defeated Tom Hebert (Airush, NCL) in the first round on men’s heats, but was later eliminated by Youri Zoon (Slingshot, NED) whom had an overall better execution of tricks. Zoon went on to eliminate Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, ITA) in the next round of heats but was then defeated by Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) in the semi final. Langeree moved on to the final against local hero Ariel Corniel (Ozone, DOM). It was so nice to see all Corniel’s support group out on the beach helping him caddy his quiver of Ozone kites opposed to Langeree whom only had one back up kite in the air. The two battled their way through the 7-minute heat. Both competitors landed various technical tricks however Corniel landed more than 15 technical tricks with more power and better execution. It was without a doubt a unanimous judge’s decision in favor of Corniel. A large crowd of Dominican’s rushed to greet Corniel on the beach, lifting him in the air, carrying him like a king. Corniel is the second professional rider to ever win a second title here in Cabarete, once in 2007 and 2010. Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) was the first to win two titles, once in 2006 and again in 2008.

Deteriorating weather conditions cause for delays

Yesterday’s outlook for today’s weather forecast did not look promising however, by midday the weather had improved and the wind started to pick up in strength. PKRA Race Director Erik Troostheide announced at the 11:30am rider’s meeting, “the wind is not 100% suitable but looks to be picking up in strength so we will attempt a start at 12:30pm.”

Michael Schitzhofer (JN Kites, AUT) made his way out on the water to fight against local Dominican Robinson Hilario (F-ONE, DOM) in the first heat of the day. Both competitors seemed to be struggling a bit with the wind however Schitzhofer defeated Hilario due to better execution of tricks and more technical difficulty. Jesse Richman (Cabrinha, USA) eliminated Schitzhofer in the second round of heats.

Spanish rider Alex Pastor (Airush, ESP) has not been on the top of his game here in Cabarete. Tom Hebert (Airush, NCL) defeated Pastor in a 2/1 judges decision due to better execution of tricks and more technical moves.

Dominican rider Alex Soto (F-One, DOM) proved he’s world-class material as he effortlessly defeated all competitors that got in his way. Soto eliminated Brazilian rider Reno Romeu (North, BRA), Luke Whiteside (North, GRB), the current tour leader Andy Yates (Slingshot, AUS) as well as Jesse Richman (Cabrinha, USA) in the double eliminations.

The weather started to deteriorate around 3:00pm. Race director Erik Troostheide had to abandon 2 heats today. The first abandonment was Sebastien Garat (RRD, FRA) against Tom Hebert (Airush, NCL) and the second was in the women’s division Audrey Meyer (Naish, FRA) against Holly Kennedy (North,GRB).

Just shortly after 5:00pm the competition was called off due to the poor conditions. Tomorrow’s forecast does not look promising, but you never know what Mother Nature has up her sleeve, especially here in Cabarete, Dominican Republic.

Tomorrow’s skippers’ meeting is scheduled for 11:30am with the first possible start at 12:00pm.

Corniel was on fire and on top of his game here at his hometown of Cabarete. He gave his friends and fans a spectacular show. Corniel had an overall better execution of technical tricks with aggressively more power than Langeree whom struggled with execution and had a higher kite position. Langeree finishes in second place while Corniel takes home the first place title.

The 5 x Kiteboarding World Champion and Legend, Aaron Hadlow (Flexifoil, GRB) was on the loose, roaming the beaches of Cabarete, cheering on his friends and fellow teammates showing his encouragement and support.

Cabarete World Cup 2010 Preview
Apr-28-2010

The world famous Cabarete World Cup in the Dominican Republic, the Kitesurfing Caribbean capital, returns in 2010 to the PKRA World Tour. This year as a 5 stars, IKA base factor 7 event. The event will be at Bozo beach from June 17 – 20, with registration on June 16th.

The top riders in the world, including 2009 World Champion Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED) and 2010 World Tour leader Andy Yates (Slingshot, AUD) will battle the extremely talented Dominican riders. Cabarete, due to its amazingly good kiteboarding weather condition, has a very high concentration of talented freestyle local riders, and has produced many kiteboarding stars, like Ariel Corniel, Alex Soto, and Manuel Rondon to name a few.

Cabarete is a classic of the PKRA world tour. It is one of the oldest PKRA World Tour events, with its debut in 2001. In 2007- Ariel Corniel- was the first Dominican ever to win the prestigious event, then in 2008 Kevin Langeree made history by being the first rider ever to win the event twice.

The event will have $30,000 USD prize money, making it a 5 star, IKA base factor 7 which will award the winner 730 points towards the world tour ranking.

In the Men’s division, the PKRA tour race to the top is tighter than ever with the top 4 competitors, Andy, Yates (Slingshot, AUD), Alex Pastor (Airush, ESP), Kevin Langeree (Naish, NED), and Youri Zoon (Slingshot, NED), within 64 points of each other. Not to mention the rest of the Pro’s very close behind.

In the women division the level is amazing with Gisela Pulido (Airush, ESP), World Champ Bruna Kajiya (Flexifoil, BRA), and talented Karolina Winkowska (Slingshot, POL) leading the way. Also there is a rumor about the return of Asia Litwin to the PKRA tour stop in Cabarete. Litwin has been recovering from an injury suffered last season.

Cabarete 2010 promises to be yet another amazing event of the 2010 PKRA World Tourhttp://www.prokitetour.com/Img/Tables/Events/cabarete2010/Cabarete-2007-event-site.jpg
