Day 3 - Gale force winds dominate the third day of competition

The wind forecast for today predicted extremely strong winds, but it was in fact nearly twice as strong. Freestylers prepared for the intense wind by pumping up kites the size of umbrellas. Sand was flying in every direction making it super difficult to stand in one place for longer than 5 minutes without becoming a sand sculpture.

At the 10:00am freestyle riders meeting, race director Erik Troostheide announced that the wind was already averaging 27-35 knots, which is 7-8 on the Beaufort scale with a mean speed of 37 knots. Troostheide stated that he would commence with the women’s freestyle double eliminations because the wind is expected increase in speed throughout the day making it extremely difficult to perform.

A total of two women’s heats were completed today. Advancing into the second round are Laura Fernandez (Cabrinha, ESP) who defeated Aya Oshima (Cabrinha, JPN) and Angela Peral (North, ESP) who eliminated Holly Kennedy (North, GBR).

In the men’s division, Johnno Scholte (Slingshot, NED) defeats Russian competitor Artem Garashchenko (Cabrinha, RUS) but is later eliminated by Tom Hebert (Airush, NCL). Hebert also defeated Sergey Belmesov (Liquid Force, RUS) and advances in the next heat against Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, ITA) who eliminated Sergey Borisov (Best, RUS) as well as fellow Italian Alessandro Lugaresi (Nobile, ITA).

The remaining double elimination heats will wrap up on Saturday, the last day of competition. Wave conditions were not suitable for the wave competitors today, therefore competition came to an early end this afternoon and will resume tomorrow.

Sebastiien Garat (RRD, FRA) decided to have a little extra fun today by testing out the Shadow Box in the extreme wind conditions here in El Medano, Tenerife. Garat tested the Shadow Box in Fuerteventura, Spain last week and managed to reach a height of 45.1 feet. Garat was more determined than ever to beat his current world record jump. He succeeded by reaching 52 feet making it the highest jump recorded on the Shadow Box to date on a PKRA World Tour Competition.

The mandatory riders’ meeting for the wave discipline is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:00am.

Day 2 - Freestyle single eliminations wrap up the second day of competition

The wind forecast today predicted a change in direction and speeds ranging anywhere from 30-40 knots. Shortly after 2:00pm the assumption was correct, the wind began to shift and the speed jumped from 10 to 20 knots within 30 minutes.

Riders abandoned their lunch in order to start pumping up their kites and preparing for an intense freestyle single elimination competition.

Youri Zoon (Slingshot, NED) had an amazing day defeating the Russian’s Sergey Borisov (Best ,RUS) and Sergey Belmesov (Liquid Force, RUS), as well as Ariel Corniel (Ozone, DOM) leading him straight into the final against Sebastien Garat (RRD, FRA). In the final heat, Zoon had an overall better execution of tricks and kite position, which made for a high risk factor due to the extreme wind conditions. Sebastien Garat (RRD, FRA) eliminated Michele Ratti Morales (Slingshot, ESP), Alberto Rondina (Cabrinha, ITA) as well as Andy Yates (Slingshot, AUS) in the semi final leading him into the final against Youri Zoon (Slingshot, NED). Zoon takes first place in the freestyle single elimination while Garat takes second followed by Yates in third.

In the women’s freestyle division it was a winning day for German rider Kristin Boese (Best, GER). Boese defeated Holly Kennedy (North, GBR), Ania Grzelinska (North, POL) leading her into the final against Spanish rider Gisela Pulido (Airush, ESP). Pulido put an end to Boese’s winning streak in the final heat. Pulido defeated Boese in a 3/0 judges decision entitling her to first place while Boese takes second. Ania Grzelinska (North, POL) defeated Kari Schibevaag (Ozone, NOR) in the women’s loser semi final leading her to third place.

The wind forecast for today is predicting to be even more intense than yesterday’s raging winds. The mandatory riders’ meeting is scheduled for 10:00am for freestyle and 12:00pm for waves.

Day 1 - Non-existent wind for the first day of competition

Today marks the first day of competition here in El Medano beach, Tenerife, Spain.

Unfortunately there was no wind, but it made for the perfect day for vacationers, riders and crew to explore the little fishing community here in El Medano.

Many riders prepared their kiteboarding gear in hopes of a change in the wind forecast. Spanish rider Gisela Pulido (Airsuh, ESP) as well as other riders jumped into the Red Bull simulated racing car to test there driving skills. After many crashes, some were successful and managed to speed their way across the finish line.

The 2002 PKRA world freestyle champion Mark Shinn (Shinn, GBR) is a registered wave competitor here in Tenerife. It’s really exciting to have a legend back on the tour supporting the PKRA. Another PKRA legend 2 x PKRA world freestyle champion in 2001 and 2003 and 2007 PKRA wave champion, Martin Vari (Vari Kites, ARG) is also a confirmed registered competitor for the PKRA racing event, which will be held in Bariloche, Argentina. Legends are made every year from the PKRA.

The tour is expanding year after year and will continue to provide a reputable reputation in the years to come.

The wind forecast for tomorrow looks hopeful. The mandatory riders’ meeting is scheduled for 10:30am tomorrow morning. Race director, Erik Troostheide will set the stage for a spectacular freestyle show.

Day 0 - PKRA registration takes place in El Medano, Tenerife, Spain

Successful registration in El Medano Beach, Tenerife, Spain

More than 27 men and 12 women from 20 different nationalities made their way to Tenerife yesterday to register for the wave discipline as well as 18 men and 8 women for the freestyle discipline.

El Medano is home to the infamous Los Alisios trade wind. Los Alisios blows from a NE direction and provides upwards of 80% of the 300 (on average) rideable days in Tenerife each year. Due to local effects including wind acceleration zones, the wind in El Medano can be expected to be between 50 to 100% stronger than is forecast making this the perfect place for a world-class PKRA kiteboarding event.

An opening ceremony and cocktail party was held at the Hotel Playa Sur Tenerife to welcome all riders and crew as well as to introduce all the organizational personnel and supporters who made this event possible.

The mandatory skippers’ meeting is scheduled for 10:00am.
