Day 2 - Major Action Hits Adicora

Adicora PKRA - Scheveningen PKRA: 2-0

With the beach even more packed than the day prior, spectators and competitors arrived to the second day of the Copa Mundial de Kitesurf Adicora with palpable eagerness and enthusiasm. Riders, volunteers, friends, family, and fans all gathered early on, not taking the chance of missing a single moment of action. As the forecast was expected to build throughout the day, Race Director Erik Troostheide made the decision to run races first, followed by the beginning of men’s freestyle single eliminations.

Starting around 11:45 with race #3, the racers entered the water once again, more motivated than ever to improve upon their previous day’s standings and climb closer to a top ranking. One fact throughout every race of the day became clear: Bryan Lake (USA) and Riccardo Leccese (COL) were the men to beat. With every race, these two competitors separated from the pack with much distance, inspiring consistent one-on-one battles for first position. At each mark and at nearly every down and upwind stretch, Leccese and Lake went head to head, putting on an amazing racing spectacle for all to see. The crowd grew more exited than ever at these moments of close calls and tight finishes, which only demonstrated why racing is deservedly one of the fastest growing disciplines in the sport of kiteboarding. In speaking of the racing conditions in Adicora, Bryan Lake discussed how happy he is to compete in a place with such great conditions, and that this may very well be his favorite PKRA tour stop of the year thus far.

In the afternoon, the “godfather” of kiting in Adicora – Carlos Cornieles arrived all the way from Hood River, Oregon, USA, to support his community and see the transformation that kiteboarding is contributing to in Venezuela. Interacting with the crowd and inspiring even more excitement and appreciation, Cornieles commented that he feels incredibly proud and fulfilled to witness such a monumental event taking place in his home spot. Interestingly enough, Carlos began windsurfing at this spot nearly 20 years ago, eventually opening the first kite school in Venezuela here in Adicora.

The hour of 3:00pm brought about the beginning of the men’s single elimination freestyle heats at the Copa Mundial de Kitesurf Adicora. Starting off with Aquiles Zabala (VEN) and Johnno Scholte (NED), both competitors put on a show for the crowd, with the local Venezuelan earning many cheers and applause – Scholte advancing. Locals Manuel Milan (VEN) and Oscar Hurtado (VEN) also initially and happily advanced in their heats, eventually losing to top riders Alberto Rondina, (ITA) and Alex Pastor (ESP). Big moves were brought forth by Kevin Langeree (NED) and Youri Zoon (NED), as well as Stefan Spiessberger (AUS). Perhaps not surprisingly, the highest score of the day went to Pastor, who demonstrated great amplitude and consistency in his heat #16, which earned 50.45 total points. Zoon took second place for the highest scoring heat of the day with 48.74.

For tomorrow, great wind is expected to continue, with forecasts calling for a solid 15-19 knots of winds. The live cast also came together today with success, as commentator Dave Tyburski operated in the live stream booth, bringing the action to viewers around the world. This live stream will continue for the remainder of the event, for which comments and suggestions are always welcome via Facebook and Twitter. Main sponsors TEX. C.A., Siragon, CanTV, and the city of Adicora can be recognized as well for contributing to such a great and well-received event here on the windy shores of the Caribbean Sea.

Day 1 - Extraordinary First Day in Adicora, Venezuela

The first day of the Copa Mundial de Kitesurf Adicora offered up a full morning and afternoon of both freestyle and racing action, complete with local talent, the best riders in the world, and a special variety of South American flavor. With the wind strong, excitement high, and the riding at its peak, the PKRA was able to run freestyle trials and two races in the afternoon.

With a huge amount of South American talent primed for competition, the freestyle trials proved to be one of the most exciting parts of the day, as friends and family as well as local supporters cheered and hollered for their favorite hopefuls and the best riders from all over the globe. Standouts of this portion included Sam Light (UK) and Christophe Tack (BEL) who threw down impressive wake style tricks. Brunaski Carillo (VEN) from El Yaque also shined, as he exhibited amazing power and complete fluidity with noticeably more power and tricks compared to his adversaries. One of the closest heats took place between Johnno Scholte (NED), Andres Salazar (COL), and Diego Badell (VEN) - a heat that Scholte eventually won. Additionally, Mario Rodwald (GER) was strong in his performance upon returning to the PKRA for his first event this year, and commented that he is very excited to be back. Rodwald went on further to explain that this will be his first event competing with the new scoring system and with many competitors in boots, so he expects an interesting competition ahead.

Once 4:30 arrived, the 12 racers were ready for their moment on the water. With winds measuring 18 knots, the stage was set for an exhilarating first day of course racing. Top competitors such as Bryan Lake (USA), Riccardo Leccese (COL), and Alvaro Cadena (COL) stood out as a few racing favorites, while others such as Manuel Abeleyra (ARG) and Cristobal Saubiat (ARG) also looked to hold their own and make it to the front of the pack. With a maximum of five races allowed for any given competition day, two were completed. In nearly every race, Lake, Leccese, and Cadena proved themselves, yet again, to be top competitors, breaking away from the rest of the fleet and leading with substantial distance. Unfortunately for Leccese, a few crashes and different tacks put him slightly behind; however, he still achieved a consistent 2nd place in the first two races. Leccese and Cadena arrived to the beach with huge support and applause from their fellow Columbians, who have traveled all this way to support them and the other South American competitors with much personality and enthusiasm. Bryan Lake clearly brought his A-game as well, seemingly flying through the course and impressing all who watched. The final results of these first five races can be viewed below.

Throughout the day, the onshore wind ranged from 13 to 21 knots. For the week, wind is expected to continue in this trend, with wind measurements in the high teens and twenties. Tomorrow, freestyle competitors will meet at 10am for an 11am first possible start. The forecast for the 14th of June is looking very favorable with slightly stronger winds of 20-25 knots. Both freestyle and racing is expected to take place on every day of competition this week.

Registration Day - Copa Mundial de Kitesurf Adicora

After days of anticipation felt throughout the small town of Adicora, located on the Northwestern peninsula of Venezuela, PKRA competitors arrived to registration with many welcomes and plenty of wind – two trends that have proven to be standard for the region. While some riders decided to familiarize themselves with the spot several days before registration day, others appeared just in time to receive their lycras, greet other competitors, and check out the conditions prior to the first official day of the event.

From the 13th of June through the 17th, 31 male and 8 women freestyle riders in addition to 12 male racers will battle it out in this lesser known mecca of Caribbean kitesurfing for $47,000 in prize money and the championship title. Currently, Alex Pastor and Bruna Kajiya retain the top ranking in men’s and women’s freestyle, while Bryan Lake holds first for the men in racing. While these competitors will surely put forth their greatest efforts to hold on to a first place title, other highly placed competitors including Youri Zoon, Gisela Pulido, and Riccardo Leccese will, without a doubt, remain motivated to break through to the top. For certain, the prime conditions in this “wind machine” of a destination will provide the most ideal location for freestyle and racing action at its very best.

Prior to this day, the town has been abuzz with major improvements and beach cleanups, as well as construction of the judging platform and rider’s tent. Upon seeing this transformation, everyone was able to appreciate the hard work that has gone into making this event possible in one of the windiest and most perfect kiting locations in South America.

Today, the beach remained full, with spectators and interested onlookers impressed with the warm-up sessions. In fact, many kiting fans and competitors traveled from nearby Columbia and Brazil, thrilled to be a part of this first-time event. Well known is the immense talent that many of these South American riders posses, who will certainly make this tour stop one of the most unique and fun events of the season.

Also of note, the PKRA has equipped itself with new gear and the best possible Internet connection that such a rural connection will allow. As such, the live stream broadcast will reach out to viewers across the globe, offering a close up look at the action along with rider interviews and commentary. The link to the live broadcast can be found here: www.live.prokitetour.com.

Fans and followers can also connect with the tour and the latest updates through Facebook and Twitter. Posted questions and comments may even be addressed live on air throughout the coming days.

STOKED! Vandaag was TOPPPPPPPPPP
morgen verder de dubbels afwerken als er wind is, komt wel goed dus!
Good job iedereeeeeen jeeeewwww
