Olympia 2016: ISAF events committee update
Thursday, 03 May 2012 14:47
The ISAF events committee discussed today the possible inclusion of kiteboarding in ISAF events and the Olympic Games. The report from the kiteboarding format evaluation group was supported with a great majority of votes, meaning that ISAF will look to include kiteboarding into the major ISAF events, which is the Sailing World Cup and the Sailing World Championships.
Events committee then struggled to make a decision between windsurfing and kiteboarding and therefore recommended to the ISAF council to postpone a decision on this issue to the November annual meeting and in the meantime to go back to the IOC and request additional medals for kiteboarding.
However, a test vote on the windsurfing / kiteboarding question in case no additional medals are granted by the IOC went clearly in favor of windsurfing - too many Sailing Associations have invested too much money into their windsurfing programs.
It has to be noted that everything decided today is only a recommendation to council - meaning that tomorrow everything could be different.
Surely the best option for everybody is to go for more medals - this is were the focus needs to be set on for the upcoming hours until council meeting, and if successful in the upcoming months until the November meeting.
