Trip Story: Ruben Lenten in South Africa |
After the PKRA season ended with the last competition in Brazil, I decided to go to South Africa for a month of training and chilling. Comps are great proving grounds and they are a lot of fun but at the same time they wear on you physically. So I left on the 30th of November headed to Capetown. The flight was nice, I even had three seats all for myself. Greg Thijsse a good friend of mine, also a PKRA rider, picked me up from the airport. He invited me to stay at his house which was right at the beach, so it was all good! The first couple days I didn"t really feel comfortable in South Africa, not sure why. But after spending some time there I acclimated and now I love it. In the first days I didn"t have my mojo to kite well, so it pissed me off a bit. But once I got used to the conditions and my new 7 meter Fuel, the super strong and gusty winds that blow there very often were not an issue. |
When the wind is blowing south east and there is a blanket of cloud on the mountain, you know it"s going to be very windy. Around 30 knots is normal for Capetown. Most of the time I rode at Big Bay which is a spot where most of the people ride. I like it there. There are nice kickers coming in and there is a shop where you can buy yummy food and drinks. During my travels I made a little movie of South Africa to give people a sneak peak at what I"m up to. Aaron Hadlow also stopped by and rode with us for a while. He too spends time in SA for off season training. We had a sick down winder together, and even saw a seal on the beach! It was too funny. We obviously end up riding a lot together whether it is in competition or in practice. The other day we had the weirdest tangle with our kites. We were both riding the same wave, about 2 meters away from each other, suddenly Aaron bottom turns right into me! The wave started breaking and our kites were tangled. We got washed big time, between, over and under each other. When the washing was over we were both fine but it was soooo weird and scary. Aaron thought we were going die. I laughed hahahah! |
Also another Dutch guy, windsurfer, Kevin Mevissen was there sponsored by Red Bull as well. I was hanging out with him a lot. And we had a really good time goofing around. |
The last 3 days of my trip we went along the coast in a van that Red Bull hired for us. A photographer and a film guy came with us, named Craig and Crispen. Really cool guys. So they were shooting Aaron, Greg and myself but we didn"t have the best luck with the wind. On our way back we found a really sick spot surrounded by mountains. It was a sick lagoon with nice wind. So we buckled down there and got some nice shots. |
After all I really enjoyed South Africa and for sure I"ll go back there soon! Nice people nice conditions and just the right s**t to play with! Ruben Lenten |
