I want to give some amazing kudos to KiteActive and Felix Maks.
We started our downwinder at the famous place Cumbuco. Our first milestone was to reach Jericoacoara
and from there on we would continue our journey to Atins. Atins is roughly 700km North of Cumbuco
with wide coastlines, amazing undiscovered delta’s and beautiful, empty lagoons.
We decided to kite the entire part with some backup and assistance of 2 pick-ups driving on the beach.
Unfortunately the pick-ups weren’t able to drive the entire way on the beach as sometimes we had to
cross rivers/ delta’s or other obstacles.
Below I’ll give you some information how we succeeded and experienced this mega downwinder. I will publish 5 vlogs every Monday beginning with this Monday. The first day we covered a pretty decent distance from Cumbuco to Paracuru. This is a known downwinder and it’s quite easy to do. Many kiters do the downwinder in one day and take a taxi back to Cumbuco. However, Paracuru is an awesome little village, which is in my opinion worth staying one night. I took out my Peter Lynn 7m Swell and my Axis 5’7 directional. It is so much fun playing in these waves with a little shore-break and friends on the water.
The first obstacle where you’ll have to pay attention is the harbour of Pecem. You cannot go around it, as it stretches some kilometres out on open sea and the wind gets pretty gusty downwind of the harbour. So you’ll need to land the kite’s, walk underneath and continue the journey. After the harbour of Pecem you’ll see a massive coastline stretching out in front of you. After 2 hours of kiting you’ll get to the little village, called Taiba. We stopped at the lagoon of Taiba and ordered some local delivery pizzas haha.. We ate the pizzas in front of the lagoon, with a drink, music and discussing what size kite we would take for the lat part.
With a full stomach we continued our last part of the first day to Paracuru. It’s only another 2 hours from
Paracuru and with full confidence we launched the kites. I decided to take my Swell 7m and directional
board again as the wind picked up a little bit stronger.
After we arrived, destroyed after 6 hours of kiting, we drove back from the beach Paracuru to our pousada situated just outside the city centre of Paracuru. Such an amazing place this pousada. The owner prepared an amazing BBQ for us with Caipirinha’s/ Picanha and delicious fresh fish from the grill. Such a good place to stay if you want to experience the hospitality of the Brazilians, the name of the pousada is: Pousada Castello de Ondas.
Waking up in a tropic place like this feels sometimes just unreal. A better start of the day isn’t possible in my opinion. Eating home-made Acai (if you haven’t tasted that in your life before, than you missed something haha..) as breakfast with a Maracuja juice if the best power breakfast for another day packed with great kiting.
Packing up the car and driving back to the beach makes you realise that this is the most wind certain place on the planet. The wind normally picks up around 9-ish in the morning, shifts around 12 a bit more onshore and drops around sunset again. In my opinion is it the perfect climate for a downwinder haha.. On the second day our goal was to reach Flecheiras. We drove back to the beach and started just a little bit more downwind as where we ended the day before. Halfway down we noticed that there was a lagoon with some shelters. Had some great freestyle session there with the Escape 9m and after that we ordered some ‘Serre’ fish for lunch. Almost everywhere on the coastline you can buy really cheap fish, Loving it!! When you arrive in Flecheiras, you’ll need to make sure that you get out before the bay. The wind gets really gusty and offshore and you don’t want to do a self-rescue just before the end of your downwinder haha..
Arriving in Flecheiras with sunset we decided to take just 1 Skoll, which is the local beer, at the beach
club with some great music (however, it it ended up with some Caipirinha’s after the Skoll again haha).
Enjoying this day and dreaming about tomorrow made me smile and realise that I was back in Brazil.
Living the good life here!!!
